To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY NOONEY VAN TUYL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Port Jervis, county of Orange, and Stateof New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. I

This invention relates to toys; and the object thereof is to produce a toy simple in construction and operation, which is operated by being inflated with air, and which will readily command attention and interest the young. This object I accomplish by means of the device described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 represents my improved toy in its normal condition; Fig. 2, a View showing the toy inflated, and Fig. 3 a central vertical sec tion of Fig. 2.

In constructing my improved toy I employ, preferably a device, the general form of which is that of a common pipe, the bowl 2 of which is so formed as to represent the bust or upper part of a human figure, with the exception of the head, said parts being clothed in the usual manner, or provided with a coat, a collar 3, and a cravat. Within the bowl of the pipe is placed the head 4 of the figure, which is mounted on a vertical tube 5 and movable thereon, which tube communicates with the bore in the stem 6 of the pipe and at its upper end with hollow elastic bulb or ball 7, preferably formed of rubber or other similar material, said ball or bulb being secured to the head 4, as shown in Fig. 3, by an air-tight connection or flange 8 and prevented from removal from the tube by a rim or flange 9 on said tube, and a whistle 10 is placed in the stem 6, of any desired form or construction. In the normal condition of the parts the head 4is inclosed or concealed within the bowl of the pipe and the bulb collapsed, as shown in Fig. 1.

In operation it is only necessary to place the end of the stem 6 to the lips and blow thereinto, when the bulb 7 will be inflated and, together with the head 4, raised to the position shown in Fig. 2, the collar being large enough to admit of the passage of the head,

which slides on the tube 5. When the bulb has been fully inflated, it will remain in the position shown in Fig. 2 as long as the air remains therein. When the stem is opened or the pressure removed therefrom, however, the air will be forcedout by the elastic bulb,

thus operating the whistle 10 in the stem 6,

which is preferably formed to operate when the air is discharged, and the bulb will collapse, as in Fig. 1, and the head sink within the bowl.

It will thus appear that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device simple in construction and operation and neat and attractive in appearance, and which is comparatively inexpensive.

Having fully described my invention, I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, the following:

l. A toy, consisting of. a device the general form of which is that of a pipe, the bowl of which represents the upper part of the human figure, with the exception of the head, and a head within the bowl, movably mounted on a tube which communicates with the stem of the pipe, and with an elastic ball or bulb secured to the head at the top thereof, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a toy, the combination of a device the general form of which is that of a pipe, having the usual stem, and the bowl of which represents the upper part of the human figure, with the exception of the head, and pro-. vided with a collar and cravat, of a head within the bowl, mounted on a vertical tube which communicates at the lower end thereof with the stem of the pipe and at the upper with a hollow elastic ball or bulb, the arrangement being such that the bulb will be inflated by blowing into the stem of the pipe and the the pipe at its lower end and atits upper-end with an elastic ball or bulb secured to the top a of the head, and means at the end of the tube to prevent the removal of the head and bulb, substantially as shown and described.

The combination, in a toy, the general form of which is that of a pipe, having the usual stem, the bowl of which represents the upper part of the human figure, with the exception of the head, said figure being provided with a collar and cravat, of a head within the bowl movably mounted on a vertical tube, which connects with the stem of the pipe at its lower end and at its upper end HENRY NOONEY VAN TUYL.
