SHOEMAKERS JACK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 547,631, dated October 8, 1895.

Be it known that I, RICHARD H. DEER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Shamokin, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoemakers J acks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

Myinvention relates to jacks for shoemakers use, and its objectis to provide an improved construction of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efliciency in operation. 4

The invention consists in .the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a jack constructed in accordance with my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail sectional views.

In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates the base of the device, formed with two upwardly-extending arms 2, with which is connected a block 3, having a conical recess 4. Located within this recess is the conical portion 6 of a bar- 7, and formed therewith is an angular hub 8 and a screw-threaded shank 9 to receive a washer 10, a coiled spring 12, and a nut 13. Formed with or secured to the upper end of bar 7 are two arms 14, and the said end of the bar is provided with an annular flange 15 to receive the lower end of a block 16, provided with arms 17. This block 16 is formed similarly to the base with a recessed and apert'ured upper end to receive the conical lower end and screw-threaded shank provided with a nut-washer and coiled spring of a bar 18, which carries the last. The upper end of the bar 18 is cut away, forming a shoulder 19 and with a recess 20. Engaging with this recess is a shank 21 of a metal last 23, which last is cutaway at the heel, forming a shoulder 24. arm is a rod 31, having a shoulder 32, and its opposite or inner end secured to the block 16. One of the arms 14 is provided with a setscrew 34, by means of which the block is held in place.

The manner of using the device will be readily understood. A right or left last, according as a right or left boot or shoe is to be operated upon, is connected with the upper end of the bar 18, the coiled spring and conical bearing at the lower end thereof holding the bar against rotation during the work, but allowing the bar and last to be readily turned when desired. When it is desired to Work on the heel of the boot or shoe, the bar carrying the last and the block connected therewith can be turned down, as shown by the dotted lines, Fig. 1. This block and the bar with which it is connected can also be rotated, if desired, on the base 1;

A jack constructed as above will be found very convenient in use, it obviating many of the objections present in the ordinary jacks.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a shoemakers jack, the combination with the base, and provided with upwardly extending arms, the block formed therewith having a conical recess, of the bar having a conical lower end seated in said recess, a screw threaded shank, and an angular hub, the washer fitting thereon, the nut, the coiled spring interposed between said not and washer and the removable last and connections, substantially as described.
