, J. H. BAILEY. ATTACHMENT FOR BLANKET FASTENINGS.
No. 547,514. Patented Oot. 8, 1895.
ANDREW RGRMIAM. PHOTO-UTHQWASHINGYOKD C Nm. TATES JAMES HENRY DAILEY, OF BURLINGTON, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE BURLINGTON BLANKET COMPANY, OF WISCONSIN.
ATTACHMENT FOR BLANKET-FASTENINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 547,514, dated October 8, 1895. Appllcation'filed July 1,1895. Seria1No,554,588- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES HENRY DAILEY, of Burlington, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Attachments for Blanket-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of horse blankets or covers which have stays or bands permanently attached thereto for holding them in place upon the animal. Its main objects are to provide a secure attachment of the fastenings of the bands or stays to the blanket or cover and to hold the front edges of the blanket or cover under the neck in place, one edge overlapping the other without interfering with the manipulation of the fastenings.
It consists of certain peculiarities in the construction and arrangement of parts of the fastenings and their attachments, as hereinafter particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings like letters designate the same parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a blanket provided with my improved fastenings. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the breaststay fastenings. Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section of one of the breast-stay fastenings on the line 3 3, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4. is a reverse view of the other breast-stay fastening and its attachment removed from the blanket.
A designates an ordinary horse blanket or cover provided with breast-stays B and B, and with one or more cross-bands or surcingles 0, preferably made of fabric or material that may be washed without injury and permanently stitched to the blanket. The front end of one breast-stay B is provided with a T- shaped loop D, and the front end of the other breast-stay B is provided with a snap-hook E. These fastenings are secured to the blanket by looping the stays through them and stitching the stays, doubled upon themselves, to the blanket. To prevent the detachment of the fastenings and stays from the blanket by the breaking of the stitches and ripping of the seams by which they are secured thereto, I pass the front ends of the stays in which the fastenings are held through transverse slits ff, underneath intermediate loops or keepers f f in patches F, of leather or other suitable material, stitched or otherwise permanently attached around the edges to the blanket. To further secure the fastenings to the blanket and relieve the stays and the seams or stitches by which they and the patches F are attached to the blanket, I pass rivets or staples g 9 through the loops f f blanket, and interposed stays, thus firmly binding them together. The front end at of the loop D projects through the front slitf outwardly over the front edge of the patch F and blanket, while the cross-piece (1', extending beyond the ends of said slit, engages with the back side of said patch, as shown in Fig. 4, so as to receive a part of the pull exerted upon the loop and to that extent relieve the stay B of strain.
That portion of the stay Bpassing through the ring or loop of hook E is reinforced by a strip e, of leather or other suitable material, which is secured with the stay and associated patch F to the blanket by the rivet or staple g, as shown in Fig. 3. The looped end of said stay, with its reinforcing-strip 6, projects through the front slit f in said patch suffi ciently to receive the ring or loop of the snaphook in front of the loop or keeperf. The upper end of each cross-band or surcingle C is also provided with a loop D, attached in like manner thereto and to the blanket by a patch F, from which is cut a loop or keeper f by transverse slits f f to receive the end of the band passing through the cross-piece of said loop. The other end of the cross-band or surcingle which passes under the belly of the animal is provided with a snap-hook (not shown) in the usual way.
The snap-hook E of the breast-stay B is hooked into and supported in place by a flexible ear H, of leather or other suitable material, which is attached to the front edge of the blanket and prevents it from being turned back and leaving a gap or opening in front of the breast.
The method hereinbefore explained of attaching the loop D to the other front edge of the blanket prevents it, also, from being turned back and folded under the blanket.
By means of the improved attachments herein shown and described for securing the fastenings to the blanket, the ripping of the seams, by which the stays and cross-bands are attached to the blanket, is prevented where they are subjected to greatest strain, and even if they should rip, so as to otherwise release them, the fastenings will be held in place by the patchesF and rivets or staples g.
I claim 1. The combination with a blanket, a fastoning and a band or stay looped through the fastening, doubled upon itself and permanently attached to the outside of the blanket, of a patch of leather or analogous material also permanently attached to the outside of the blanket and out to form a loop under which the doubled end of the band or stay is passed and held next to said fastening, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination with a blanket, a fastening and a band or stay looped through said fastening, doubled upon itself and permanently secured by both ends to the blanket, of a patch of leather or analogous material also permanently secured to the blanket and having two transverse slits forming a loop under which the doubled end of the band or stay passes next to the fastening, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination with a blanket, a fastening and a band or stay looped through said fastening,- doubled upon itself and permanently secured by both ends to the blanket, of a patch of leather or analogous material also permanently attached to the blanket and formed with a transverse loop under which the doubled end of the band or stay passes next to the fastening, and a rivet or staple passing through the loop of said patch and the underlying band or stayinto the blanket, and binding them together, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The combination with a blanket, of a T-shaped loop, a band or stay passing through the cross piece of said loop, doubled upon itself and permanently secured by both ends to the blanket, and a patch of leather or analogous material also permanently secured to the blanket and formed with two transverse slits through one of which the middle member of said loop projects, the cross piece of the loop and the adjacent doubled end of the band or stay being held between said patch and the blanket, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. The combination with a blanket, of a snap hook or fastening, a band or stay passing through said fastening, doubled upon itself and secured at both ends to the blanket, a reinforcing strip of leather or other suitable material passing through said fastening next to the band or stay, and seen red therewith to the blanket, and a patch of leather or analogous material attached to the blanket and forming a transverse loop under which the band or stay and reinforcing strip pass next to the blanket, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. The combination with a blanket, a fastening and a fabric band or stay passed through said fastening, doubled upon itself and permanently stitched through both ends to the outside of the blanket, of a patch of leather or analogous material also permanently stitched to the outside of the blanket and formed with a loop over the doubled end of said band or stay next to said fastening, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I alfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES HENRY DAILEY.
