HENRY D. GARDY, OF CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF TO TAYLOR O. BURK, OF SAME PLACE.
TOY PISTOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 547,394, dated October 1, 1895. Application filed August 16, 1894. Serial No. 520,476. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY D. GARDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Pistols; and I do hereby declare the following to vbe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to toy pistols, and has for its object to providea pistol or gun which can be used to facilitate the gaine of marbles. I'leretofore it required long and tedious practice to become an expert, while with the aid of my invention the smallest child is enabled to perform this feat Well with very little practice, and, further, by the use of my invention this game becomes useful as well as a pleasure. The use of the gun or pistol trains the eye, cultivates the judgment, and tends to establish a perfect harmony of action between the eye and the nerves; and with this object in view my invention further consists in the parts and combination of parts, as will be more fully set out in the following specification and claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through my invention, the parts in position for firing. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing position of parts after firing. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the plunger and its spring. Fig. et is a perspective View of the muzzle, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the muzzle with several different sizes of marbles held by its resilient ribs.
A represents the handle of my marble-shooting device, preferably hollow, and B the barrel thereof, in the top of which is a slot b, to be hereinafter referred to.
b is a buffer in the slot o.
The plunger consists of a cylindrical body C, from which extends forwardly the strikingpoint c. l
O is an ear or projection extending upwardly from the cylindrical body O and adapted to Work in the slot b.
D is a spiral spring within the barrel B, one end of which is secured to the rear end of the barrel, while the other end is secured within the cylindrical body C.
E is a trigger having the catch e.
e is the triggerspring.
F is the muzzle having the spring-ribs f. The advantage of constructing the muzzle with spring-ribs is .that a marble may be placed therein and the ribs will clamp it in position, thereby enabling the operator to aim the pistol down without danger of the marbles falling out. Further, marbles of different sizes may be inserted in the muzzle and held therein irrespective of the position of the pistol. The parts being assembled, the operator compresses the spring by pulling the cylindrical body toward the rear of the pistol by means of the ear or projection c', and when the springis thus compressed the catch e of the trigger E springs up in front of the body O, thereby holding the spring in its compressed position. A marble of any desired size is then pressed in the muzzle and held there by the spring-ribs f. After the proper sight has been taken the operator vpulls the trigger E, thereby releasing the plunger, whereupon the spring expands and pushes the plunger forward with great force, and the striking-point c strikes the marble sharply, thereby knocking it out of the springribbed muzzle.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a toy pistol, the barrel provided with a slot, a buffer b secured in the forward end of said slot, the striking point c, a cylindrical body integral with and extending rearwardly from said point, a projection c extending upwardly from the cylindrical body and adapted to work in the slot of the barrel, a coiled spring seated in said cylindrical body, flat spring ribs Iiared outwardly, and secured to the extreme end of the barrel, the `free ends of said ribs being turned back, all combined and operating as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
HENRY D. GARDY. Witnesses:
JosIAH SMITH, JESSE B. BERRY.
