Description
VUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELLIS DoTY, oF JANESVILLE, WISCONSIN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,701, dated May 15, 1866.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLIS DOTY, of Janesville, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have made new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation ofthe same, sufficient to enable one skilled in the art to which Vit is allied to construct and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which is made part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a top View, the handle being removed on section -line e d, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line a b, Fig. l.
The invention consists of an interior valvev plug for a washing-machine, operated by a spring or lever, with a pointed end to guide it into the opening through which the water is discharged, and with a shoulder or pin, by the contact of which with some portion of the .tub it is maintained in its raised position as Y edge of the tub, having a slot through which passes the upper end of the shaft C of the plug D lThe plug has a pointed end, E, which serves as a guide to facilitate its entrance into the opening at the bottom of the tub, and it also has an india-rubber disk, F, which closely embraces the plug and by contact with the iioor of the tub closes the aperture, being pressed thereon by the spring Gr. When it is desired to open the discharge-aperture the plugl is raised and is maintained in its latter position by the catching of the shoulderH upon the ledge B, that portion of the slot being narrower than the place whence the handle protrudes in her in its closed position, shown in the figures.
The red lines in Fig. 2 show the open p0sition for the spring-plug.
A lever may be substituted for the sprin g.
Around the opening at the bottoni ofthe tub is a groove, g, which, by leaving a raised rim in immediate proximity to the hole, prevents the drip of Water from bein g conveyed along the bottom of the tub and wetting the under surface.
Havin gdescribed myinvention, whatl claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The inside plug-valve for closing the discharge-opening of the tub or chest, :actuated by spring or lever, and'maintaiued in open position by the engagement of a shoulder or pin with the ledge or other portion of the chest, substantially as described.
