JAMES PINFOLD, OF ASTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-I-IALF TO JAMES GEORGE ACCLES, OF PERRY-BARR, ENGLAND.
CARTRIDGE=GASE PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,936, dated September 24, 1895.
Application filed March 13,1894. Serial No. 503,454. (No model.) Patented in England April 16,1892, No. 7,341; in Belgium September 30, 1892, No. 101,314, and in France December 8,1892, N0- 224,197.
To all wwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES PINFOLD, engineer, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 233 Park Road, Aston, near Birmingham, in the County of Warwick, England, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Cartridges, (for whiChI have obtained patents in Great Britain, No. 7,341, dated April 16, 1892; in Belgium, No. 101,314, dated September 30,1892, and in France, No. 224,197, dated December S, 1892,) of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to Cartridges having an internally -grooved metal base or head formed separate from the body of the Cartridge and subsequently attached thereto.
The object of my invention is to provide new and ilnproved means for securing the body of the Cartridge to the base; and to this end the invention consists, essentially, in the combination, with an internally-grooved head or base and a tubular Cartridge-body, of an expansion-piece which is integral with the base or head and a second divided or slitted metal eXpansion-piece which is not integral with the base or head and which is inclosed by the forrner whenthe same is expanded and retains the Cartridge-body in the groove of the head, as will more fully hereinafter appear.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a Cartridge constructed in accordanoe with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the internally-grooved head or base. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the second divided or slitted metal eXpansion-piece; and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of a Cartridge, showing a reinforcing gas-Check arranged in the base of the Cartridge.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein- The letter A indicates a paper or other tube forming the body of the Cartridge, and B' the metal head or base piece having an annular groove b formed in the interior thereof in any suitable manner. The head or base piece B' is provided at its center with a circular projection b' having an orifice therethrough.
The head or base B', is formed integral with the expansion piece or ring F3, located in juxtaposition to the annular internal groove Z).
The letter F indicates the divided or slitted metal expansion piece or ring, which is not integral with the head or base B'. The expansion piece or ring F is shown circular in Cross-section.
In applying and securing the Cartridge-body A to the base or head B' the Cartridge-body is inserted into the head or base and the divided or slitted expansion piece or ring F is forced downward to turn the bottom edge of the Cartridge-body into the internal annular groove b, after which the edge of the expansion piece or ring F3 is bent or turned over` the expansion piece or ring F to more firmly and securely hold the latter in place, as will be best seen by reference to Fig. 4. The Construction shown in Fig. 4 is the same in all substantial respects as that shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, with a reinforcing gas-check J as applied thereto.
As shown in Fig. 3, the extreinities of the divided or slitted expansion piece or ring F are turned up, in order to enable it, when eX- panded radially outward into place in the bottom of the groove b, to bear all around against the interior of the Cartridge-body. The upturncd ends of the ring are of course depressed and abut one another when the ring is expanded. The separate expansion piece or ring F, secured by the expansion piece or ring F3, securely holds the Cartridgebody to the Cartridge base or head.
Having thus desoribcd my invention, what I claim isvIn a Cartridge, the combination with the internally grooved head or base, and With the tubular body, of an expansion piece which is integral with the base or head, and a sec` ond slit metal expansion piece which is not integral with the base or head, and which is inclosed by the former when the same is expanded and retains the Cartridge body in the groove of the head, substantially as desoribcd, and for the purpose specitied.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of February, 1894,.
JAMES PINFOLD.
