A SAP-BUCKET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,648, dated September 24, 1895.

Be it known thatl I, CHARLES BOUTON, a citizen of the United Statesresiding at Hudson, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in sapuckets; andl do hereby declare the following to be a full', clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertans to make and use the same.

In a sugar-bush it' is customary and desirable to empty all the sap-buckets periodically; but owing to the irregularity in the positions of the trees it is often difticult for the persons charged with this work to remember which buckets have and which have not been emptied.

My invention is a cheap and simple bucket having a cover secured thereto in such manner that it cannot be blown o or accidentally removed in any manner, which cover is capable of being turned over without being disconnected from the bucket, whereby if said covers are differently colored on opposite sides and if they are turned over every time the buckets are emptied one may tell by looking at the buckets from a distancewhether or not all have been emptied.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts shown in the drawings and as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation and Fig. 2 is a plan view of my improved bucket.

Referring to the parts by letters, A represents the bucket, which may be of any suitable shape and may be made of any desired material. A

B represents the cover, which may be made of any desired material; but I prefer to Amake it of wood and to brace and strengthen it by the cleats b, secured to the opposite sides, which cleats also serve as convenient and inexpensive means for lifting said cover.

C represents a frame which is pivoted to the bucket, and to which the cover is pivoted at two points diametrically opposite to each other in such manner that the cover may be turned in the frame. In the construction shown 4this frame is very simple and cheap, being made of wire curved substantially as shown to bring the ends c c opposite to each other, and said ends are bent toward each other,thereby forming the pivots for the cover. This wire frame is pivoted near its middle to the bucket by means ot ears ct a, secured to the side of the bucket, having eyes through which the wire passes. Horizontal holes are formed in the edge of the cover at points diametrically opposite to each other, and the ends c c of the wire frame enter these holes and serve as the pivots upon which the cover turns.

I believe the form of frame and the means for pivotally connecting it with the bucket and cover to be the simplest and cheapest which can be constructed, and I have made a specific claim to this construction; but I likewise believe the invention is broader than this specific construction, and I have made other claims intended to cover not only the specific construction shown, but the modifications therein which a mechanic could readily make. For example, the form of the frame might be changed. It might be made of other material, it might be pivotally connected with the side of the bucket by other means than those shown, and it might be pivotally connected with the cover by different specific means than are shown and described. The essential characteristic of the invention is the pivotal connection of a frame with the bucket and the pivotal connection of the cover to the frame in such manner that it may be turned on said frame, substantially as specified. It is intended that the opposite sides of the cover shall be painted in dinerent colors. When the person charged with such work empties a bucket, he should reverse the cover. Thus when all the buckets have been emptied the tops of .all the covers should show the same color. It one or more has not been emptied on any round, it may be readily detected from a distance, because its cover will show a dierent color'.
