STOVE.-
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,026, dated September 10, 1895.. Application filed October 8, 1894. Serial No. 5 25 ,274. I (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEONARD Now, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Stove, of which the following is a specification. The invention relates to improvements in stoves. The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of stoves to economize fuel and to provide a damper attachment capable of enabling the draft to be readily controlled and adapted to hold a body of fire a great length of time, and thereby save fuel.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a stove constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the damper attachment. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a wood stove or heater of any desired configuration and provided at its front with upper draft-openings 2 and a lower enlarged opening 3, which openings are covered by a damper-casing 4E, and admission of air into the stove iscontrolled by a verticallymovable damper 5. The lower opening 3 is of a size to permit the entrance of a fire-shovel for the purpose of removing ashes. The casing 4., which prevents side drafts from choking the fire when the shovel-opening 3 is exposed, is substantially rectangular, and is composed of similar outward-extending sides 6, a horizontal top 7, and a bottom 8, extending horizontally beyond the sides to form a hearth-platform and provided at its edges with avertical flange 9 to prevent ashes from spilling upon the floor. The sides 6 are provided at their edges with vertical Ways 10, in which the damper 5 is slidingly mounted and is adapted to be raised to expose the shovel-opening and to permit a draft. The damper maybe provided with a central opening and may have secured therein a piece of isinglass 11; but a solid damper may be employed, if desired. It is raised and lowered by means of a vertically-disposed rod 12, rising centrally from the top of the damper and arranged in a perforation of a guidearm 13 and frictionally engaging the latter and terminating in a knob or handle 14. The lower portion of the rod is secured to the back or inner face of the projecting upper portion of the damper, and the latter is provided on its inner or rear face with a horizontal flange 15, adapted to abut against the top of the casing to form a stop. The damper may be raised to a greater or less extent to obtain the desired draft, and the draft may be entirely shut off to hold a body of fire for a long time for the purpose of economizing fuel.
The casing may be of any desired size and shape, and it provides an intervening airspace to prevent the heat of the stove from Warping or otherwise injuring the damper; and although in the accompanying drawings the damper attachment is shown applied to a wood-stove it will be readily understood that it may be employed on any ordinary form of heating-stove.
It will be seen that the damper attachment is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that it enables the draft to be readily controlled, and that it is capable of lessening the expenditure of fuel. It will also be seen that the damper is protected from excessive heat, that it is adaptedto expose the shovel-opening, and that the casing prevents ashes and coals from dropping upon the floor.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details'of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim is The combination with a stove provided at its front with openings, one of them being enlarged to permit the insertion of a shovel, and a guide arm extending horizontally from the top of the stove and provided with 'a perforation, of a casing mounted on the stove and covering the openings, and comprising vertical sides provided with ways, a top connecting the upper ends of the sides, and a bottom, and
a Vertically movable damper mounted in said In testimony that I claim the foregoing as Ways and closing the front of the casing and my own I have hereto affixed mysiguature in provided With an upward extending operating the presence of two Witnesses. rod arranged in the perforation of the guide arm and frictionally engaging the latter, Witnesses: whereby it is secured at the desired adj ust- H. E. CANTRELL, menr, substantially as described. J. A. BARTON.
