CAR-=COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters I-atent No. 545,933, dated September 10, 1895. Application filed May 2, 1895. Serial No. 547,866. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we,'JOHN K. ADAMS and JOHN H. SIDDEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Gentry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Couplers; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object is to make an automatic car-coupler which will be simple in its construction, easy to operate, inexpensive to make, not liable to get out of order, and which may be coupled or uncoupled without danger to life or limb.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section.
In the drawings, A is a draw-head which may be attached in the usual or any preferred manner and be provided with a flaring mouth to receive a coupling-link B.
O is an ordinary coupling-pin with a head at the upper end and a shank which drops through two registering holes in the top and bottom of the draw-head.
D is a lever fulcrumed in the box I), flexibly connected with the head of the pin 0 in front, and at the rear pivotally connected with a vertical rod E, whichgoes down into a horizontal channel aof the draw-head. Here the rod is pivotally connected with the rear end of the lever F, fulcrumed on a cross-pin in the draw-head, extending nearly to the front end and there provided with the headf, havinga curve on the fore part thereof. Just back of this front curved head is a slot f, through which passes the eoupling-pins shank. The lever D has its fulcrum adjustable in the box I) and its rear end adjustable with the rod E by a detachable pin and a series of holes, respectively, in the box and rod. When the link presses against the curve of head f of the lever F, said head rises and lets it pass on while its rear end is depressed, which causes the lever D to simultaneously lift the pin. After the front end of link has passed the head f and the pin they both drop so as to couple the cars.
" What we claim as new is- In a car coupler, the pin 0, the lever D flexibly connected with its head, and the vertical rod E pivoted at the upper end to said lever, in combination with a lever F having the front-curved head f, the pin slot f, and its rear end pivoted to the lower end of rod E, all substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN K. ADAMS, JOHN II. SIDDEN. Witnesses:
T. M. HUMPHREY, R. M. lVIAGEE.
