LIONEL E. LEVY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LEG GlN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N6. 545,702, dated. September 3, 1895.
Application filed May 31, 1895.
.able in size for the purpose of adapting it to any size of leg, the fit being made by first adjusting the leggin to the leg, while after the adjustment has been obtained the perfect fitting is always accomplished.
The invention consists of the usual body, which comprises a leg portion, an ankle portion, and a foot portion, the meeting parts of the leggin at the bottom of the same being provided with the usual buttons and buttonholes and also provided with a foot-strap, while at the upper part of the leggin is provided a series of adjustable elastic straps, which are connected to the opposite meeting or lapping parts of the leggin. The connection of said straps with the meeting or lapping parts of the leggin is made respectively with the outer side of one lapping part and the inner side of the other part, so that when the said parts or edges are together the adjustable straps are partly covered, while by means of a flap fixed to thatlapping part of the leggin which comes at the inside the ends of said elastic straps are covered, said flap being provided with buckles which receive outer straps fastened to the adjacent meeting part.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is, a perspective side view of my improved leggin the covering-flap being partly thrown back. Fig. 2 is a perspective side elevation of the upper portion of the leggin, showing the flap thrown back and the outer lapping part or edge also thrown back to disclose the adjustable elastic straps; and Fig. 3 is a detail transverse section through the meeting edges of the leggin, showing the adjustable elastic straps and fastening or outer straps on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The body of my improved leggin is pro- Serial No. 551,136. (No model.)
vided with a leg portion a, an ankle portion ct, and a foot portion a and has at the lower portion of the meeting edges of the body the usual buttons and buttonholes b I), respectively. The upper portion of the meeting edges of the leggin are connected together by means of elastic straps 0, one end of each of said straps being fastened to the under side of the outer lapping part of the leggin, as shown at C, while the other endsof each of said straps are provided with sliding loop-shaped buckles 0 so that by sliding said buckles on the bodies of the elastic straps, which pass through them the lengths thereof can be adjusted. The looped portions of the elastic straps 0 hold rings 0 which are adapted to engage over hooks D, secured to the outer surface of the inner lapping part of the leggin, as shown. I preferably employ three of these adjustable elastic straps and three corresponding hooks; but this number can be varied as desired. By means of these elastic straps the leggin is adapted to accomplish a snugger fit, as is done by the well-known elastic gaiter. v
The snug fitting of the leggin to the leg is rendered possible by reason of the sensitive adj ustability of the elastic straps, which when properly adjusted, according to the size of the leg, enable the leggin to be put on with an exact fit and without undue compression of the muscles or blood-vessels. Sewed to the inner lapping part of the leggin just outside of the line of the row of hooks D is a longitudinally-arranged flap E, that extends from the top of the leggin to about midway of the length thereof and opens at the side edge. To the outer side of this flap is attached a series of buckles e, provided with tongues e, by means of which the straps F, which are attached to the outer side of the outer lapping part of the leggin, are adapted to be fastened to the flap E. Each of these straps E has an elastic insertion f in it, so that they are rendered extensible and can give to the action of the muscles the same as can the elastic straps C.
It is evident that the leggin can be made of leather, canvas, or any other suitable material, and that by means of the covering-flap F the unsightly hooks and rings of the elastic side of the inner lapping part of the body, a flap secured to the inner lapping part outside of said hooks, buckles arranged on said flap, and straps secured to the outer lapping part and adapted to be secured in said buckles, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LIONEL E. LEVY.
