Description

` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEG F. H. JONES, OF ATTICA, NEW YORK.
WATER-DRAWER.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,558, dated May 8, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F. H. JONES, of the town of Attica, in the county of Wyoming and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Method for Drawing NVater from Wells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof', reference being given to the accompanying' drawings, and to the letters ofreference marked thereon.
The nature ot' my invention relates to an improved method or device by which water may be drawn from deep or shallow wells used for culinary or other purposes; and consists more particularlyin providing guides for conducting the bucket up and down iu the well, thus preventing' the bucket from swinging or twisting the strap which maybe attached to the bucket.
It further consists in providing a brake iu a cheap and novel manner, that may be applied at will to the windlass or capstan.
Figure I is a perspective View ot my improved water-drawer. Fig. II is aperspective view ot' the inside of the curb. Fig. III is a top-plan view, showing the brake. is a view of the drum, clutch,l and crank. Fig. VI is also a top-plan view ofthe same. Fig. V is a view or cut ot the brake, showing the lug.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Letters of like name and kind ret'er to like parts in each ot' the figures.
A represents the curb, of common construe tion, with the top tapered or drawn in for the purpose of bringing it to a suitable or convenient size to receive `the machinery to which it is attached.
Bis the cylinder or drum, with wheels O and D, that, iixed to the sha-ft, and being of larger diameter than the drum, t'orms ianges upon each end, which prevents the strap or band E from running off while in operation.
F is the brake, made in the form otl al1 elbow, secured by the pivot-bolt c, the short arm 'of which comes near the periphery of the wheel C, but not touching it. 1t will be ob- Fig. IV`V bucket.
served that on the brake-leveris a lug, c, which, when not used as a brake, fits into the notch or scatO, Fig. VI, and thus secures the drum rigidly to the shaft; but when the brake-lever is brought in contact with the periphery of the wheel or iiange C the said lug is removed from the seat O, and the drum runs loose upon the shaft, while the crank remains stationary.
His a spiral spring secured to the brake and top portion `of the curb, which serves the purpose otl keeping the brake oft the iiange and the drum fast to the shaft. So it will be seen that by working the brake back and forth throws the shaft in and out ot gear with the drum.
t', Fig. I, is a-lso a ratchetbrake that works in the ratchet-wheel D, and is also operated by the brake F. The end of thebar ot the pawl or brake t' is bent over the lever F, so that when the lever F is moved the pawlt thrown out ot' the ratchet and the bucket` drawn from the well.
n u are rods which serve the purpose ot' guides for the bucket as it ascends and descends, by passing through the loops or eyes n n, which are attached to the bail of the x is a hook, secured upon one side ot' the bucket, so that as it ascends it will come in contact with the bail I, and, as the bucket continues to ascend, the contents of the bucket is emptied into the spout P.
l is the crank, rigidly secured to the shaft m, and by which the bucket is lowered and raised.
Having thus described my invention, what. I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The brake F, provided with lug c, for t-he double purpose of a brake and, for holding or securing the drum B to the shat't or loosening it at will, for the purposes and substantially as described.
2. The ratchet and pawl, when constructed and operated substantially as herein set forth.
