GURLING IRON HOLDER.
' Patented Sept. 3, 1895-.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. TURNER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
CURLING-IRON HOLDER.
:SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,557, dated September 3, 1895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curling-Iron Holders; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it most nearly appertains to make, use, and practice the same.
The present invention relates to a certain new and useful curling-iron holder, the object of which is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which may be readily secured to a gas-burner and which will hold the curlingiron to be heated in close proximity to the flame or gas-jet, but prevent the same from entering therein, thus permitting the iron to receive the full benefit of the heat of the flame without causing the same to become blackened by the smoke thereof, which does occur where the iron is held directly over the flame.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a gas-burner with my attachment or holder secured thereon, showing the curling-iron held in position. Fig. 2 isa detail perspective view of the curling-iron holder, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the holder. 4
The letter A indicates an ordinary gasburner, and A the flame of gas. Over the burner my holder is secured or placed, which holder consists of the metallic thimble B. This thimble is made tapering, so as to fit over any size burner, and by preference is split or open, as shown at a, in order that it may expand as pressed over the burner, and thus tightly embrace the same. This thimble is cast or provided with an outwardlyprojecting flange, lug, or'shoulder B, which flange, lug, or shoulder holds the curling-iron.
In placing the holder upon the burner care should be taken that the holding flange, lug, or shoulder project from the burner at an angle to the slit of the tip b, so that the curling-iron when in position will be exposed to the side of the flame and not to the edge thereof. This I advise in order that the iron may not enter the flame and become blackened. It is only necessary to secure the iron in position that the jaws O G be opened and the flange, ing, or shoulder be inserted there= Application filed February 11, 1895. Serial No. 537,896. (No model.)
between. By releasing the jaws the same will 5 5 come together and clamp the lug, flange, or shoulder therebetween, the pressure of the jaws being suflicient to hold the iron in place. When secured, the curling-iron will be in-position indicated by Fig. 1, the iron being exposed to the heat of the flame at the side thereof.
While I have described the curling-iron holder as consisting of a thimble provided with a holding or supporting flange, it is ob- .65 vious that in place of a thimble I may make employment of a solid or split ring. It is also apparent thatby simply providing the burner itself with an outwardly-projecting lug, shoulf der, or flange the curling-iron may be equally 7o as well supported and held in contact with the heat of the flame. Consequently I do not wish to be understood as confining myself to the use of the thimble.
My device when placed upon the burner does not interfere with the gas flame or jet, and after it is once secured in place it is not necessary to remove the same after the curling-iron has been heated; but it may be and should be left secured to the burner. By leav- 8o ing the device attached to the burner it is always in position for immediate use, and there is no danger of the same becoming lost, which does happen with that class of heater which has to be removed after an iron is heated, in order that the flame or jet may not be interfered with. This advantage will be greatly appreciated by those accustomed to use contrivances of this nature.
Having thus described my invention, what 0 I claim as new, and desire to secure protection in by Letters Patent, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a curl ing iron holder, consisting of a metallic thimble adapted to be secured over a burner, pro- 5 vided with an integral outwardly projecting holding flange.
2. As a new'article of manufacture, a curling iron holder, consisting of a tapering split thimble adapted to be secured over a burner, provided with an integral outwardly-projecting holding flange.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE A. TURNER.
