- v F. A. HEGGY.
FLUE'OAP.
No. 545,499. Patented Sept.- 3, 1895.
WITNESSES NITED STATES PATENT FFICE,
FRANK A. HEGGY, OF CANTON, OHIO.
. FL U E-CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,499, dated September 3, 1895.
Application filed April 15, 1895- .To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. HEGGY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canton, county of Stark, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flue-Caps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in flue thimbles and stops; and it consists of cer tain features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a longitudinal section showing the stop in the thimble, and Fig. 2- is a perspective of the stop.
.A denotes the thimble that is placed in the flue-wall, and B is the flue-stop, which is formed substantially as shown in Fig. 2, having an outside plate 0 to cover the outer end of the thimble, to which is secured by the spring bowed arms D ahead B, thatis formed of the two circular disks a, having secured between them a circular disk I), made of asbestos or other non-combustible material, that is somewhat larger diametrically than the disks (1 and larger than the diameter of the thimble so that I when placed in the thimble, the flexible rim portion of the asbestos 'd-isk will conform to the inside of the wall, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby forming a joint be tween the thimble andthe head.
The arms D are outwardly inclined, the central portions a resting against the sides of the thimble, whereby the cap Ois held centrally over the end'of the thimble. The head 0 is preferably flat, or nearly so, the outer edge being slightly turned inwardly to stiffen or form a rim to the edge.
For convenience in removing the cap and head a disappearing handle E is provided,
Serial No. 546,691. (No model.)
that is formed of a single piece of wire of suitable size and bent'in U form, the end portions passed through apertures d and bent out, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. Between the apertures d is formed a depression or recess 6 to receive the end portion f of the handle when pushed in, as shown in Fig. 1, in which position the wall-paper may be applied over the handle without disfiguration or inconvenience.
The prime object of the invention is to provide a non-combustible head B or stop that may be placed in thethimble near the flue end and that will conform to the sides to prevent the heating of the cap 0 to hold the soot back, so that when the stop is withdrawn soot will not follow and fall on the floor, said head having arms by which it is supported in the thimble and connected with a cap provided with the disappearing handle. It will be noticed that the spring-arms, in addition to securing the several parts together, alsoserve as means to prevent the device being accidentally knocked out of the thimble, as they will spring out against the walls of the thim ble and have a frictional engagement there with. 1
Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim is- A flue cap composed of two metal heads a, a non-combustible headb of a greater diame ter than the head a and having a flexible edge adapted to rest against the inner wall of a stove pipe thimble, spring'arms D curved out and adapted to press against the thimble, and a cap 0, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of February, A. D.
FRANK A. HEGGY. Witnesses:
