Description

W. H'- HARBAUGH.
Heating Stove.
Patented May 8, 1866.
M PEYERS, Pmwmhu nbwuwmln m D. Q
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WASHINGTON H. HARBAUGH, OF PIQUA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN H EATlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,532, dated May 8, 1866.
1 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WASHINGTON H. HAR- BAUGH, of Piqua, Miami county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoves and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to an arrangement of parts constituting a convertible cooking and warming or ventilating stove.
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a form of my convertible stove adapted for wood fuel. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, the principal parts or members bein g detached.
Resting upon a suitable hearth, A, is a shell, B, having one or more series of draft-apertures, O U. The lower portion of this shell B constitutes the lire-chamber D.
In its most complete form my stove C0111 prises an upper shell, E, adapted to rest upon and to have its lower edge fit snugly within the upper margin of the shell B.
F is a top plate, which may be employed to close the upper shell, as in Fig. l, or to close the lower shell when the upper one is dispensed with.
G G are smoke-ventages, of which the vent age G is closed by a cap, y, when the upper shell, E, is used.
The shells B and E are traversed horizontally by drums or chambers, H and I, which drums receive external air through ascending inlets J, and discharge the same through ventages K K into the apartment, or into a pipe communicating with some other apartment. One or more of the drums H I are provided with doors h i, enabling them to be used as ovens, and when intended for such use the ventage K or K, as the case may be, is closed by a cap, L.
When the upper shell is dispensed with the upper end of the fresh-air pipe at 75 is closed by a cap, 70.
M N are partitions extending from the chambers 1-1 and I, respectively, to the shells B and E, so as to compel the smoke to circulate around the said chambers before escaping at the ventage G. The partition M is traversed by a series of apertures, m, which may be thrown open by the drawing back of a register, 0, so as to allow a direct exit for the smoke in the act of kindling the fire or during warm weather, when not much heat is wanted. Similar apertures n and a register, 0, enable a direct exit to the upper ventage when the shell E is employed.
A register, 0, may be applied to one or each of the series of draft-apertures G G.
I claim herein as new and of my invention .1. The arrangement of the oven H, door h, ventage K, and cap L, substantially as do In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
W. H. HARBAUGH.
