J. ROSENBUSH.
. COMBINED BOX AND RACK. No. 545,175. Patented Aug; 27, 1895.
VYlTNESSES: INVENTOR fizz W MW;-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH ROSENBUSH, OF MONTROSE, NEiV JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE R. HOEHN COMPANY, OF NEvV YORK.
COMBINED BOX AND RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,175, dated August 27, 1895.
Application filed April 5,1895- Serial No. 544, (NO 1110591) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. J OSEPH ROSENBUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mont rose, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin a Combined Box and Rack, of which the following, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to boxes and cases specially intended for the use of physicians and surgeons and ordinarily containing bottles, tubes, instruments, (to.
The object of the invention is to provide a rack for the temporary support of bottles, tubes, or other apparatus, to be combined with a box or case in such a manner and of such construction as to be convenient to manipulate and to occupy a small space which ordinarily is used for no other purpose.
The invention consists in combiningwith the cover of the box or case, a slide which normally occupies a portion of the hollow space within the cover and which when desired for use may be moved partially out of its inclosme into operative position where it will be supported and held by the box-cover.
The invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure represents a perspective view of a box or case with the cover open and the rack in operative position.
Referring to the drawing by letter, A rep resents a box or case which may be of any desired form, but as shown is rectangular and adapted to contain flasks or bottles of remedies, acids, the. The box is provided with a hinged cover a. This will be of ordinary construction-that is, consisting of a rectangular flange a and a covering a thus leaving a' space inside of the cover. In this space and resting over against the under side of the covering a 1 locate a slide 5. This will preferably be a wooden slab, although it may be a plate of metal or other material. Its size and shape are such as to fit loosely inside of the flange of the cover. One of'the sides or crosspieces of the flange is provided with a slit or elongated opening 0 of a proper size to perm it the slide 1; to pass through it. That portion of the slide which stands adjacent to slit 0 is provided with a number of openings or seats I) for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. The slide is held in place by cleats b and by the slit 0, the slide being long enough to project into the slit until its edge is flush with the outer surface of the box-cover.
hen required for use the slide Z) is pushed or pulled outward through the slit about half its length or a distance to expose the openings and the seats I). This position is shown in the drawing where it will be observed that the cleats b and the slit hold it stable. W hen not in use the slide is simplypushed in until its outer edge is flush with the flange of the cover. In this position it is out of the way and does not interfere to any extent with the operation of the cover and does not occupy a space which is ordinarily used for any other purpose.
In operation a tube or vessel (represented in.
the drawing by d) containinga compound or material of some character which is required to be set aside to rest for the purpose of settling or quiet chemical action is placed into one of the openings or seats I) with its lower end resting upon any support which may be beneath it. If the vessel is more of a cup shape, it may be supported entirely by the slide by inserting it in one of the openings.
The ordinary purpose for such a rack is to support what are known as test-tubes, but it is obvious that my invention comprehends a rack of the character and construction described for use in connection with any box or case whatever.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A box or receptacle for storing bottles, tubes and the like comprising a casing with a supporting rack for said articles, a hinged cover, said cover being formed with flanges on its four sides, one of said flanges having a slit or opening, and a sliding rack in the form of a plate having openings or seats fitting within said cover and having one edge projecting into the slit or opening in the flange of the cover, and a guiding oleat for said rack arranged on the inside of said cover; substantially as described. 2. A box or receptacle for storing bottles, tubes or the like, comprising a casing, a hinged cover, said cover being formed with flanges on its four sides, one of said flanges having a slit or opening, and a sliding rack cover and adjacent one side only; substanin the form of a plate provided with openings tially as described. 10 of varying shapes and sizes for the reception In testimony whereof I subscribe my signaof bottles, test tubes and the like, said sliding ture in presence of two witnesses. Y 5 rack fitting Within the cover and having one JOSEPH ROSENBUSH.
edge projecting into the slit or opening in the Witnesses: flange of the cover, and a short guiding cleat \VM. A. ROSENBAUM, for said rack arranged on the inside of said JOHN KRAEGER.
