movably attached to the finger-bar, whereby they may be readily detached for the purpose of sharpening, and, furthermore, to provide common means for'securing the sickle-bar and the guard-plates in their operative positions.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be more particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cutter-bar embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section'of the same taken on a plane between, two adjacent guard-fingers. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of a portion of the sickle-bar and attached knives inverted. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the guard-fingers detached. Fig. 5 is a detail view in perspective of a portion of the guidebar and attached guard-plates.

1 designates a finger-bar, the front and rear edges of which are disposed at an angleand converge toward the outer end of the bar, and to the under side of this bar are attached the rear ends of the spaced guard-fingers 2, having shoulders 3 arranged in front of and spaced from the front edge-of the'bar. The front ends of the horizontal guide-openings 4 in the guard-fingers are closed by wedgeshaped shoulders 5, and the guard-plates 6, which are arranged horizontally upon the upper surfaces of the body portions of the guardfingers, are provided at their front reduced ends with V-shaped notches 7 to engage the wedge-shaped shoulders at the front ends of.

which is slidably fitted the sickle-bar 1l,carrying the knives or cutters 12, which bear upon the upper surfaces of the guard plates and have lateral cutting-edges to co-act with those of the guard-plates. Attached to one end of the sickle-bar is an eye 13 for connection with the means for operating said bar, and secured to the upper surface of the finger-bar, contiguous to the front edge thereof, are clips 14, which are bent forward at their upper ends to extend over the sickle-bar. These clips are removably attached to the finger-bar by means of screws or bolts 15, and they serve to hold the sickle-bar and the guard-bar in place.

From the above description it will be seenthat the guard-plates are not attached to the guard-fingers, butare notched at their front ends to engage wedge-shaped shoulders near the front ends of said fingers, the rear ends of said plates being removably attached to a guard-bar which forms the guide and seat forthe sickle-bar and is removably seated between the front edge of the finger-bar and contiguous shoulders on the guard-fingers.

Therefore, by removing the clips, the sicklebar and guard-bar, with its attached guardplates, may be removed to provide for sharpening the knives and guard-plates. It will be seen, furthermore, that when the guardplates become worn to such an extent as to render them useless they may be replaced without replacing the'guard-bar, and that in use the sickle-bar is protected from wear by the guard-bar and therefore only the knives come in contact with the grain or other material which is being harvested.

In addition to the above-described means for holding the guide-bar from movement with the cutter-bar, I employ projections 16 on the front side thereof toengage notches 17 in the shoulders 3 of the guard-fingers.

It will be understood that in practice various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what the guard-fingers, guard-plates attached to the guide-bar and provided at their front ends with notches to engage shoulders on the guardfingers, a cutter bar seated to slide in the groove of the guide-bar, and clips for temporarily securing the cutter bar in the groove, substantially as specifier].
