UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER YVOMAOK, OF EMMETT, IDAHO TERRITORY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO ANDREW KELLEY, OF SAME PLACE.
FINGER-BAR FOR REAPERS, MOWERS, 800.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,387, dated July 23, 1889.
Application filed February 5, 1889. Serial No. 298,768. (No model.)
T on whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER WoMAoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Emmett, in the county of Ada and Territory of Idaho, have invented new and useful Improvements in Finger-Bars for Reapers, Mowers, &c., of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in finger-bars for reapers, mowers, &c.; and it consists in a certain novel construction and combination of devices, fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the I 5 appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of 'a portion of a finger-bar provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same to show the Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the removable blocks. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of a portion of the finger-bar.
2 5 Referring by letter to the drawings, A design ates the finger-bar, carrying the guard-fingers B B, and provided at its front edge, respectively over the said fingers, with the recesses O O.
0 D designates the cutter-bar, which fits at its rear edge close to the-front edge of. the fingerbar, and E designates the securing-plate, which is attached to the finger-bar and extends over the cutter-bar to hold the latter 3 5 from rising at its rear edge.
The wear-blocks F are dovetailed, being beveled at their ends in two ways-namely, upwardly and forwardlythereby making the rear side wider than the front side and the 40 lower edge longer than the upper edge. The recesses O in the front edge of the finger-bar conform in shape to the blocks, so that the latter fit snugly therein, being inserted from the lower side of the finger-bar, and the lower edges of the blocks bear on the upper sides of the fingers, and are thereby prevented from dropping out of position. The blocks cannot provide finger-bars with removable wearblocks, and do not claim this; but heretofore it has been the practice to secure the said blocks in place by means of screws and similar devices, which, when the blocks become worn, are difficult to remove, and are also liable to rust in place, whereas the improved blocks are held in place by their peculiar shape, and when worn may be readily removed after removing the fingers.
Having thus described the invention, I claim 7c 1. The combination, with a finger-bar having dovetailed recesses in its front edge, said recesses having forwardly and upwardly converging end walls, of the wear-blocks fitted in the said recesses and having their ends 0011- verging upwardly and forwardly, and means for supporting the blocks, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the finger-bar havin g guard-fin gers attached thereto,of the wearblocks beveled toward their front sides and toward their upper edges, fitted in similarlyshaped recesses in the front edge of the finger-bar and bearing at their lower edges on the fingers, respectively, whereby the latter serve to hold the blocks in place, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- ALEXANDER WOMACK.
