JOHN O. DEVRIES, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TOGEORGE H. MILLER, OF SAME PLACE.
CORK-EXTRACTOR.
$PECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 544,463, dated August 13, 1 895.
Application filed January 24, 1895. Serial No. 536,077- (No model.)
To alZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN O. Dnvarns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented 5 a certain new and useful Improvement in Cork-Extractors, of which the following is a description.
Myinvention relates to cork-extractors; and it has for its objectto provide a simple, inex-' [O pensive, and effective cork-pulling device which will.not mar or injure the cork, but leave it in a condition to be used again.
It has also for its object to provide a device of this kind which will serve to easily withdraw the cork from the bottle with a steady and gradual draw, instead of a sudden jerk, thereby lessening the liability of spilling the contents. 7
To these ends my invention consists of two prongs or blades and a body or finger portion, all of which are formed integral, bent and shaped in the manner hereinafter fully described in the specification, and particularly pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the manner in which my improved-oork-extractor is used. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the extractor. Fig. 3 is an end view of the M Fig. 4 is a view of a modification hereinaftef'referned to, and Fig. 5 is a view of the extractor in itsizase.
My invention comprises a body or finger portion 1 and the pulling-prongs 2, whose 3 5 ends are sharpened and bent slightly outward at 3 to prevent the prongs from running into the cork, and also to assist the said prongs in following the contour of the inside of the bottle-mouth where indentations occur, as in 40 catsup-bottles. It will be particularly noted that the prongs are so bent at the handle or coil as to be in alignment with each other, and it is in this form that I prefer to use the device, although, as is obvious, they need not 5 be in alignment. As is obvious, the prongs may be made to converge (see Fig. 4:) without departing from the spirit of my invention. The prongs may also have their faces beveled horizontally, as at 4, thereby forming a knifeedge, so that when they are inserted and twisted in the neck of the bottle the strain on the prongs will be inward against the coils, thereby assisting in the removal of the cork and at the same time tightening the coils or inner sides cut away, as at 6, to more readily assist in replacing and withdrawing the extractor from the case. As is obvious, the case may be hung from the Watch-chain or otherwise used as an ornament.
It will be noted that the double coil on the flexible metal rod forms a long easy spring, which readily adjusts the prongs to any size cork and also holds the prongs in their proper position when not in use, and by crossing the rods on the opposite sides of the coil a shoulder is formed, which supports the prongs and prevents them from twisting out of position when in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An improved cork extractor formed of a flexible metal rod, bent to form a central coil, the ends of which terminate in oppositely projecting horizontal portions, such portions being bent at an angle to form prongs, said prongs being tapered toward their points and beveled at their front faces to form knife edges, all arranged substantially in the manner shown and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
