Be it known that I, FINLAY R. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Southampton, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined DriveIVell and Pump, of which the follow-Y ing is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for sinking wells, particularly where the water or other liquid which it is desired toA reach is a considerable distance below the surfaceof the ground, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, cheap, and readily-operative device by means of which, after the water has been reached, the iinal section of the driven well may be converted into a permanent pump.
The invention consists in the novel cone struction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which like letters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout, Figure l is a vertical section taken through the center of a device embodying my invention when ready for use. Fig.
2 is a section, taken upon similar lines, of the inner cylinder, forming part thereof, having connected thereto the inserting and remov- .ing pipe which I use in connection with the device. Fig. 3 is a horizontal transverse section taken upon the line x Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a device used for removing'the ball-valve inserted in the well.
In sinking wells to a considerable depth it has been the custom to employ a hollow cylindrical shaft commonly termed a point, and it is to such class of well-driving devices that the invention irnoie particularly appertains.
In the practice of my invention I secure upon the usual drive shaft or point A, surrounding the upper end thereof, a joint or coupling B, which said coupling may be secured to the said drive shaft or point by any desired means and is interiorly screw-threaded at the top. The said coupling has at the center thereof an inner annular iange C, which is also screw-threaded. Within the flange C is inserted a metallic cylinder D, preferably constructed of brass and tapering or decreased in diameter at its lower end D',
which latter is eXteriorly screw-threaded to engage with the flange C. Surrounding this cylinder is a casing E, also screw-threaded at the lower end and inserted in the top of the coupling B. This having been effected, the point A is sunk into the ground by any desired means in any approved manner until water has been reached, whereupon a preferably solid brass ball F is dropped from above into thecasing E, whence it falls into the cylinder D, the lower reduced portion D thereof forming a seat for the said ball, into which seat the said ball will find its way. As soon as the ball has been deposited in the cylinder a plunger G is inserted therein, the said plunger being of the usual or of any other preferred construction and having screwed in the top thereof a tubular handle H, which I prefer to form of a number of small pipe-sections H, the length of the plunger being adjusted by screwing together more or less of the pi pe-sections, according to the depth to which the well is sunk. Any suitable bearings may be arranged upon the top of the casing E for the rod H to work in, and thus constructed the device forms a perfect well-pump, the ball F serving as a valve.
I claim it as an advantage of myinvention that the last section of the drive well or pipeas thus formed may at once be transformed into a pump by the mere dropping of the ballvalve therein and insertion of the plunger, as by this means a saving vof at least tifty per cent. of the cost of construction of devices of this character and the sinking of wells thereby is effected. v
In order that the cylinder D may beremoved from engagement with the inner flange C of the coupling B, I form upon the interior periphery of the said cylinder, atyits lower end D', a left-handed screw-thread D2, into which a tubular rod or pipe I may be screwed, whereby after the said pipe hasbeen turned as far as the depth of the thread will permit any further turning thereof will unscrew the lower end of the cylinder, which may then be drawn upward by means of the said rod or pipe I. Not only is this arrangement advantageous in removing the cylinder after the well is driven, should such be desired, but also by this means the well may be completely driven before the cylinder is inserted in the ICC coupling, this insertion being effected by means of the said rod I; and, furthermore, should it be desired to repair the well at any time it will be of especial benefit to provide for the removal of the said cylinder, though, ot` course, the plunger G and the ball-valve F would in that case require first to be removed. The said ball-valve is preferably removed by means of the device shown in Fig. 4, which comprises a rod J, having curved metallic spring-arms J', which, when pressed downwardly upon the ball between thesame and the sides of the cylinder D, engage said ball and clasp the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a combined drive well and pump, the combination, with a suitable driving shaft or point, ot` a coupling secured thereon and screw-threaded at the top, a pipe section engaging therewith, a cylinder within the pipe removably secured to the coupling and reduced in diameter at the lower end, a hall adapted to fit within the said end when dropped in the cylinder,and a plunger adapted to be inserted therein, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a combined drive well and pump, the combination, with a driving shaft or point, ot' a. coupling secured thereon, and screwthreaded at the top, a pipe section engaging therewith, an annular screw-threaded flange at the inner side of the coupling, a cylinder within the pipe having a reduced lower end to form a valve seat and screw-threaded to engage with the flange, a reversed screwthread formed upon the interior of the cylinder, a solid ball adapted to fit Within the lower end of the cylinder, and a plunger adapted to be inserted in the said cylinder, substantially as shown and described.
