No. 544,282. Patented Aug. 13,1895.
UNITED STATEs PATENT ()FFICE.
HARRY NOBLE BIGGER AND LEROY AYERS BIGGER, OF DUSHORE,
' PENNSYLVANIA.
SAW-GUIDE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,282, dated August 13, 1895.
. Application filed April 27, 1894- serial No. 509,260 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HARRY NOBLE BIG- GER and LEROY AYERS BIGGER, citizens of the United States, residing at Dushore, in the county of Sullivan and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Guides; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to saw-guides, and has for its object to provide an improved construction for adjusting the carrying box along its bed-plate; also a new construction for clamping the shank of the outer guide-arm and the sleeve of the inner guide-arm togeth er also an improved construction for connecting the shank of the outer guide-arm and sleeve of the inner guide-arm to the carryingbox; also an improved construction for adj usting simultaneously outward or inward both the outer and the inner guide-arms, and also to provide other improved features of construction and combination, as will hereinafter appear.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the construction and also in the combination of parts hereinafter particularly described and then sought to be specifically defined by the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the saw-guide embodying our invention and showing in dotted lines a portion of the frame to which the bedplate is clamped, also the saw which fits between the guide-arms, and also the pin or lever for operating the adj usting-nuts. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the saw-guide with parts in section, showing the guide-arms thrown back from the working position illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is an end view of the carrier-box. Fig.5 is a side view of the outer guide-arm .and its shank. Fig. 6 is. a side View of the inner guide-arm and its sleeve.
Fig. 7 is a side view of one of the adjustingnuts, partly in section. -Fig. 8 is a side view of another of the guide-nuts, partly in section, and also an end view of the same; and Fig. 9 is another side view of the sleeve to the inner guide-arm, showing the slit therein.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the bed-plate adapted to be secured to a suitable part *of the frame of the machine, and formed with a guideway 2 for the carrier-box 3 to slide in, and formed with a longitudinal slot 4 for the passage of the bolt 5, which secures the carrier-box to the bed-plate, and which is provided with a nut 6, by means of which and the bolt 5 the carrier-box can be clamped to any desired position on the bedplate. The carrier-box 3 is formed with the opening 7 for the passage of the sleeve of the inner guide-arm and the shank of the outer guide-arm, and is divided or separated at one side, as indicated at 18, so as to constitute a clamp for the purpose of clamping the sleeve of the inner guide-arm and the shank of the outer guide-arm at any point in their longitudinal adjustment desired. For this purpose it is preferred to form a flange 9 to extend over a portion of the carrier-box at the point where the division is made therein, so that by passing a threaded bolt 10 through that flange and into the portion of the carrier-box beneath the same, the carrier-box may be caused to clamp the sleeve of the inner guidearm and the shank of the outer guide-arm in their adjusted position in the carrier-box.
Through the opening 7 in the carrier-box passes the sleeve 11 of the inner guide-arm 12, which sleeve at its rear portion is threaded, as at 13, so as to receive a nut 14, which encircles the sleeve and is held against one side of the carrier-box by a slotted flange 15, extending from the sides of the box, so as to permit the nut to be turned so as to move the guide-arm 12, as well as the outer guide-arm 18, in and out to the extent desired to adjust the two arms to the saw-b1ade. The shank 16 of the outer guide-arm passes through the sleeve 11 of the inner guide-arm, and is clamped thereto so as to move in and out with the inner guide-arm by forming a slit 17 longitudinally in the sleeve, which makes a split sleeve, so that when the two parts of the carrier-box are drawn together by the bolt10 the sleeve 11 will be caused to clamp the shank 16 tight enough to cause the sleeve and the shank to be moved together as the sleeve is fed in and out by the nut 14. For the purpose of preventing the shank of the outside guide-arm turning in the sleeve of the inner guide-arm and forguidingthe same we provide the shank 16 with a pin 19, which fits in the slit 17 of the sleeve at one end at the point where that slit is shown as enlarged, as indicated by the numeral 20. We may form ribs or studs 21 on opposite sides of the slit 17 of the sleeve 11, to form an extended bearing for the pin 19, and a flange 22, projecting from one side of the carrier-box, as illustrated, will serve as a stop for the inner guide-arm to rest on, so as to support the two arms in a horizontal position.
For the purpose of adjusting the outer guide-arm 18 in and out independently of the inner guide-arm 12, we provide a halflock nut 23, which has a swiveled connection with the end of the sleeve 11 and engages the threaded portion of the shank 16, so that by turning this nut by means of a pin inserted in any one of the openings shown as made in the periphery of the nut the shank l6 and its guidearm 18 will be moved in or out independently of the guide-arm 12.
If it is desired to turn or swing both the inner and the outer guide-arms together, so as to free them from the saw, the bolt 10 is loosened to release the clamp of the carrierbox on the sleeve 11 and the clamping of the sleeve on the shank 16, when both of the guide-arms can be turned to the extent desired and afterward tightened and held in position by tightening the threaded bolt 10.
The merits of the invention will be appreciated by those killed in the art, and the operation of the guide will be clearly understood from the foregoing description.
Ve have described and illustrated the preferred details of the several parts of the guide, butit is obvious that variations maybe made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having described our invention and set forth its merits, what we claim is- 1. In asaw guide, the combination with the guide arm provided with a split sleeve, of a second guide arm provided with a shank fitting in the split sleeve, and means for clamping the shank and sleeve together, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In a saw guide, the combination of a carrier-box having an extension on one side lying above the lower portion of the box with a space between the lower portion and said extension to render a portion of the box elastic or compressible, guide arms having one a split sleeve and the other a shank passing through said box, and meansactingonsaid side extension of the carrier-box to compress the same for the purpose of clamping the sleeve and shank of the guide arms in the box, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. In a saw guide, the combination of the guide arm formed with an expansible sleeve having a portion thereof threaded, a second guide arm having a shank passing through said sleeve and held therein by contraction of said sleeve, and a nut working in the threads of the sleeve and held against movement lengthwise of the sleeve for the purpose of moving longitudinally both the shank and the sleeve by turning of the nut, substantially as and for the purposes described.
4. In a saw guide, the combination of the carrier box formed with aslotted projection or flange, the guide arm formed with a threaded sleeve passed through the carrier box, the nut fitted to-the threaded portion of said sleeve and working in the slot of said projection or flange whereby the nut is held against movement longitudinally of said sleeve, the guide arm provided with a threaded shank passing through said sleeve, and the half-lock nut swiveled to said sleeve and engaging the threads of said shank, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
