MATCH-SAFE.

A will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My present invention relates to match-safes, and has for its object certain improvements in construction, which will be fully disclosed in the following specification and claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure l represents a front elevation of my improved match-safe; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 3, a 4front elevation with the front of the matchpocket removed; Fig. 4, atransverse section of the body of the safe with the cover detached; Fig. 5, a like view with the cover applied; Fig. 6, a vertical longitudinal section of the match-safe and a box of matches in the iSafe, and Fig.7 a front elevation of a match- Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates the matchsafe, which consists of an elongated rectangular body having an extension a at its lower end to form a pocket to receive and contain matches as they are fed into it from a pasteboard box B, which is placed within the safe. which is provided with inwardly-turned flanges ff on its edges, whic/h.engage and slide upon the iianges d d ofr the sides c c, and the cover is slightlyrnarrowerthan the body b to draw the sides of the body ifvvad and spring the back outward, as shown in Fig. 5. The sides c cof the body b are parallel with each other, and the cover C is slightly narrower at its upper and outer; en d g than at its lower and inner end h, for the reason that the outer ends of the sides being free they yield more readily to the contraction of the cover than can the inner ends, on account of theirl being held rigidly by the front/i and bottom lo of the extension or pocket a, and this taper in the cover also causes it to t tight upon the body of the safe. The transverse curve in the back e of the safe -is also produced in the bottom of the match-box B, which tends to loosen the matches and cause them to gravitate toward the lower end of the box, and the box is clamped at its edges by the cover of the safe.

At the inner end of the cover C is an inwardly-projecting flange Z of less width than the match-safe, which serves to support the matches in the box B and direct them back toward the bottom of the match-box and cause the matches to pass under the match-feeder D, and also to spread the loose lap m m of the sides of the match-box and prevent the match-box being pushed too far down in the safe and prevent a properdischarge of matches from the boxB into the pocket a. The iange Z is provided with aport 'n to admit of the matches being touched by the finger of the person using the safe to loosen the matches should they from any cause stick in the passage under the flange.

The feeder D, which is preferably attached to' the inner side of the cover, is resilient, curved inwardly, and provided. with an outwardly projecting arm 0, which extends through the cover O and by which the feeder is operated, and with an inwardly-projecting finger p, which engages the matches, as shown in Fig. 6.

The pasteboard matchbox B is provided with a tongue q formed in the one side of the box and at one end thereof by cutting two incisions r s in the box, and the feeder D engages and pushes the tongue q inward to assistrin supporting the matches in the pasteboard box before they pass the finger p of the feeder and to loosen the matches as the feeder is struck by the finger, which causes the feeder and the tongue to vibrate.

To prepare the pasteboard box B, one end fn of the box may be bent down at and the laps m m of the sides of the box bent outward, as shown in Fig. 7, when the box is pushed under the outer end of the cover C with the open end 'of the match-box inward and the ICG box pushed in the safe until the open end of the match-box reaches the inner end of the cover, with the sides m m and end n of the box extending beyond the flange lof the cover C. The end of the box may, however, be en tirely removed before the box is inserted in the safe.

The front t' of the extension a may be provided with sandpaper t (shown in Fig. l) upon which to rub the matches to ignite them.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. A match-safe having an elongated body provided with sides having flanges on their upper edges and an extension at the lower end of the body forming a pocket, and a sliding cover having flanges on its edges to engage the flanges on the sides of the safe and an inwardly projecting flange on the 'lower end of the cover of less width than the matchsafe.

2. A match-safe having an elongated body provided with resilient sides having flanges on their upper edges, and an extension at the lower end of the body forming a pocket, and a sliding cover having flanges on the sides of the safe and constructed to draw the sides inward and curve the back of the safe outward and an inwardly projecting flange on the lower end of the cover.

3. A match-sate having an elongated body and an extension at the lower end of the body forming apoeket, and a sliding cover having an inwardly projecting flange at its lower end of less width than the match-safe and pro vided with a match feeder.

4. A match-safe having an elongated body and an extension at the lower end of the body forming a pocket, and a sliding cover having an inwardly projecting flange at its lower end of less width than the match-safe and provided with a finger port, and a resilient match feeder attached to said cover.

5. A match-safe having apocket at its lower end and provided with asliding cover having an inwardly projecting flange at its lower end and a match feeder attached to the cover, in combination with a match-box having a resilient tongue in one ot its sides to be engaged by said feeder.
