Be it known that I, THOMAS BERESFORD WALKER, asubject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knee and Thigh Protectors, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to protectors adapted for the use of cavalrymen and other equestrians for protection of the rider against rain or snow, as well as against the sun or wind; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved protector of this character distinguished by simplicity, cheapness, and efficiency and adapted to be readily applied and removed.

The invention comprises a knee-protector and a thigh-protector, arranged for ready connection with each other and with the trousers legs and the boots or leggins, respectively, all as hereinafter particularly described, and defined in the claims.

Reference is to be hadto the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side view illustrating my improved protector applied to a trousers-leg and a leggin, which are shown in part. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the thigh-protector before being applied, the securing straps or tabs being omitted; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the knee-protector.

The knee-protectorA is of somewhat triangular shape, being wide or rather high at the center and of reduced width at each side, the sides and bottom edges converging, thereby producing at the lower corners the side flaps a a, while the top edge is preferably curved at the center, as at a. Further, at the top the protector A is rounded to provide substantially a concavo-convex formation, as at o to enable the protector to conform to and curve over the bent knee of the rider. The bottom edge a is preferably concaved slightly, as shown.

The thigh-protector B also is of somewhat triangular shape, rising at the top at the cen-- ter, as at b, and fashioned to provide side flaps b, while the bottom edge is concaved at the center, as at 6 and convexed at each side of the center, as at b The protector B adjacent to the concavity b is rounded or of somewhat concavo-convex formation,.as at bfl-to overlie the similar formation or of the protecfor A. Suitable fasteners are provided for securing the protector to the leggin O or to a boot. In the instance shown the protector is fastened to the leggin or boot by a rosette device 0, which engages the knee-protector A near the lower edge at the center, the said protector having an aperture a forthis purpose, and the leggin O or boot is in practice also apertured to be engaged by the fasteningrosette c or equivalent device. The flaps a a are also each apertured, as at a, and similarly the flaps b are apertured, as at 12 for receiving additional rosettes c or other fastening devices.

It will be seen that the fastening devices at the flaps pivotally secure the protectors A B to each other, and at the same time secure both to the leggin O or boot-leg. The securing of the improved protector in place is completed by elastic straps or tabs D, attached to the thigh-protector B, at the upper edge of the latter, at each side of the center, the free end of each strap having any suitable device for engaging the trousers-leg, the device in the instance shown consisting of a loop d, which engages a button 8, or the like, onthe trousers. tor B is drawn and held sufficiently tight to the leg to prevent the entrance of rain to the boot-leg orleggin. It overlies the upper edge of the knee-protector, preventing entrance of rain, snow, or wind at such meeting parts. Both themembers or protectors A B by their flaps-fully protect the sides of the leg, and by the novel shape the flaps of the member B overlie the side flaps of the knee member A, which are at the lower corners of the latter, and this enables the single fastening devices at each side to pivotally unite the protectors to each other and also to secure both to the leggin or boot-leg.

It will be understood that in producing my invention in practice any suitable material may be employed, such as leather, rubber, waterproof cloth, or the like.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent With this construction the protec- 1.- As a new article of manufacture, the herein described knee and thigh protector for equestrians consisting of a knee member and a thigh member overlapping the knee member, each member being approximately of triangular shape and the sides of the members being reduced in height forming side flaps at the lower corners thereof, the side flaps of the thigh member extending downward below the center or body thereof, and overlapping the side flaps of the knee member, the respective flaps being united at the lower corners of the same and means for holding the members in position on the wearer, substantially as described.

2. The herein described knee and thigh protector, comprising aknee member substantially triangular in shape and reduced at the sides forming side flaps at the lower corners, the upper part of said knee member being shaped to fit upon the knee of the rider, and a thigh member also approximately triangular in shape and adapted to fit upon and overlap the said knee member, the side flaps of the thigh member extending downward below the center or body of the same, and overlapping the side flaps of the knee member, a pivotal connection between the said members near the ends of the flaps, a fastening device arranged at or near the center of the knee member near the lower edge thereof and adapted to secure the same to a boot leg or leggin, and straps secured to the thigh memher and having their free ends provided with devices for engaging the trousers leg, snbstan- 3;
