Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcEo SAMUEL W. LANGDON, OF JEFFERSON COUNTY, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARN-YARD SCRAPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No'. 54,373, dated May 1, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. LANGDON, of the county of Jefferson, in the State of Iowa, (my post-office address being Fairfield, 1owa,) have invented a new and Improved Road and Barn-Yard Scraper; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and eX- act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
D is the scraper or dirt-gatherer, and is mortised or dovetailed into the sides S S, and may be adjusted at a proper angle for the work for which the machine is used. The lower part or edge of thescraper is faced with iron. The sides are connected by the platform P, fast.- ened securely over the scraper, and also in front by the cross-bar O.
The operator lls the machine by springing the lever L and stepping upon the platform. VVllenv he wishes to dump or unload he raises the forward part of the machine by means of the lever. rIhe machine is thus held in its elevated position by means of a notched wooden or iron spring passing through the lever.
The forward arm of the lever is fastened by means of an iron yoke or band passing under the rear end of the tongue just forward of the platform.
The fulcrum ot' the lever is an upright post securely mortised into the axle A. The axle Works in iron or wooden arms, which project backward from the rear end of the sides.
The wheels maybe of wood or iron, or both. Tile machine from outside to outside may be three feet wide. The tongue should be thirteen feet in length. The lower edge of the sides should project about two feet forward of the lower edge of the scraper or dirt-board.
The whole machine is worked or drawn by two horses, attached by means of double and single trees forward o f the cross-bar G.
I claim- Tbe invention of the foregoing machine and the combination of its different parts, as set forth above, and as shown by the accompanying drawing. y
SAMUEL W. LANGDON. Attest:
J. B. SIMPSON, A. R. FULTON.
