IMPROVEMENT IN BOLT-FASTENINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,348, dated May 1, 1866.

To ali whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMEs M. HOPKINS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and `1mproved Bolt for Windows, Doors, Src.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enableothers skilled in the art to makeA and use the same, reference bein ghad to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specification.

The. present invention relates to a new and improved bolt especially adapted as a fastening for doors ot' book-cases, closets, windowsashes, and many other similar purposes; and it consists in a novel arrangement of parts in connection with the bolt, whereby it can be thrown out or drawn in with the utmost ease and facility, and by simply pressing with the fingers or thumb of thehand upon certain portions ot' t-he bolt-connections, as will be hereinafter fully described, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawings, of which- Figure l is a view of the rear side of the frame or casing in which the bolt and its connections are arranged for convenience in being applied to a door, window, or other desired place, and showing the bolt thrown out; Fig. 2, a similar view to Fig. l, but with the bolt drawn in 5 Fig. 3, a View of the front and exposed face or plate of the bolt-casing or frame when applied to a door, dto.; and Fig. 4', a central transverse section of the bolt-casin g, taken in the plane ot' the line or no, Fig.3.

A in the drawings represents the frame or casing for the bolt and its connecting operating parts, which frame is made of a rectangular box-shape with one of the plates, B, projccting beyond each and forming ears O, having apertures ct, for the insertion of screws or otherfastening devices, when it is to be secured to a door, window, &c., the box portion of the casing being mortised or countersunk in the same. v

Across the box-frame A, and from one end plate to the other, extends a shaft, D, turning in bearings at each end of the said end plates,

which shaft is provided with three cranks, E, F, and G, one, E, at the center, and the other two, Fand G, at equal distances from the center one, E, but extending in directions diametrically opposite each other. On the centershaft crank E, by a slot, b, is hung the inner end of the bolt H, moving through asuitable and corresponding shaped aperture of the side plate, I, of the trame-box A, and on each of the end cranks, Fand G, is hung the inner portions or ends, J, ot' the respective pusher-buttons L and M, working and playin gin suitable-shaped apertures of the front plate, B, ot' the bolt-box A, one of which buttons, L, projects from the said plate B when the other, M, is drawn in or tlush therewith, as shown in Fig. 4,0r viceversa, the pushing in ot' the projecting button with the. thumb or iin ger of the hand revolving the crank-shaft to which it is hung in common with the other button and the bolt sufficiently to throw out the other button and either draw in or throw' out the bolt H, as the case may be, as is obvious without further explanation, a spring, N, tixed at one end to the inside -of the bolt-box A, and at its other bearing upon the square portion O of the crank-shaft, holding the bolt in positioineither out orin, with sufficient firmness to prevent it from moving either in one direction or the other, except pressure be brought to bear upon either one or the other of the said thumb-pieces, according as which is projecting from the bolt-box A.

What I -claiin as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of the crank-shaft D, bolt H, and thumb-pieces or buttons L M, when connected and arranged together, so as to operate substantially in the manner described, and for the purpose specified.
