Fl RE-ALARM BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 543,104, dated July 23, 1895. Application inea May 1o, 1895. saranno. 548,819. m0 model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CHAR-LES A. ROLEE, a citizen of thefUnited States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illii nois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in FireAlrarm Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a street or like lire-alarm box, containing suitable signal-transmitting means, with a tele phone which can only be used by authorized .persons and Vwhich is not necessarily available to any person who may open the iirealarm box for the purpose of turning in an alarm of fire, and to provide a simple, eco-V nomical, and compact construction andarrangement for the foregoing-described purpose.
In accordance with my invention the realarm box is provided with a hinged door which can be opened so as to permit access to the usual signal-transmitting instrument within the box. This door of the box is provided with a chamber in which I arrange a telephone-instrument, and I further provide such door with a hinged door for opening and closing the chamber in which the telephoneinstrument is arranged. The door Vof the telephonehamber is provided with a lock, whereby it can only be opened by aperson holding a key for the same, in which way a person having a key for the main dooi or otherwise permitted to open the same, so as to use the signal-transmitting instrument, cannot, as a matter of course, use the telephone.
In the accompanying drawings, F-igure 1 shows in elevation the ire-alarm box with its door swung open, also showing the door for the telephone-chamber swung open, so that the telephone can be used. Fig. 2 is a sec tion on *line a: in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a like view showing the door of the telephonechamber closed. Fig. 4 is a like View showing both doors closed. v
The fire-alarm box A isprovided with a hinged door B and is understood to contain any ordinary or desired signal-transmitting mechanism for turning in an alarm of fire. The hinged swinging door B of the box is secured so as to providel it with a Vtelephonechamber b, suitablefor the reception of a telephone rinstrument C, which is Varranged Within such chamber and available to user cess to such instrument to all but properlyauthorized persons the main door B of the box is provided on its rear side with a hinged door D, arranged for closing and opening the chamber b and having a suitable lock, as at d, in which way, while a person may open the box, so as to use the iire-alarm-instrument, he cannot use the telephone unless supplied with a key for opening the door D.
The telephone-circuit can be carried into the box from chamber b in any desired way, a simple and convenient arrangement being to connect the wires o of the telephone-circuit with the metal hinges E for the main door of the box, in which case the hinges can be insulated from 'the box by insulating pads or plates, as at e. v
When the door of the box is swung open, as in Fig. 3, the telephone will be concealed by the looked door D; but by unlocking the latter it can be swung open, as in Figs. 1 and 2, thereby rendering the telephone conveniently accessible to the person desiring to use it.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A fire-alarm box containing suitable signal transmitting means, and provided with a door having a chamber containing a telephone instrument, and a door for closing such chamber, whereby the telephone can be used, only by opening the door of the fire-alarm box and then opening the door for the chamber in which the telephone is contained, substantially as described.
2. A lire-alarm box containing suitable signal transmitting means, and provided With a hinged door having a chamber containing a telephone instrument, and a doorfor closing such chamber, the telephone circuit being carried from the said chamber into the box, and being arranged to include insulated hinges between the box and the main door for the same, substantially as set forth.
