To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JEAN LOUIS ROMAIN WEISS, engineer, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing in Suresnes, (Seine,) France, have invented an Improved Apparatus or Means for Promoting Perspiration, which may be also employed for warming or airing beds or the like, of which the followipg is a specification.

This invention relates to improved apparatus or means for promoting perspiration,

which may be also employed for warming or airing beds or the like.

I will describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of the said apparatus. Fig. 2 is a plan View. Fig. 8 is a horizontal section, and Fig. 41 shows the apparatus in use in a bed.

The apparatus consists of an upper and lower dished plate A and B, preferably of metal, and connected together by metal arms or rods 0, jointed at their outer ends a and b to the upper and lower plates, and centrally between the two plates at their inner ends, where they are also jointed to other metal rods D, preferably situated horizontally. At each of the points of junction 0 of the connecting arms and rods rings are provided to which the said arms are attached. The arms 0 may be formed of rigid rods or chains and of any incombustible material.

The lower or base plate A is provided centrally with a sconce or socket d for taking a candle or lamp or other similar heating device, and concentrically. with this socket is arranged a guard or chimney, so as to surround the candle or lamp to a sufficient height. At the center, on the under side of the upper plate B, is provided an extinguisher or conical hoop f, with its opening or base situated downwardly and in a Vertical line with the socket on the base-plate.

On the upper side of the upper plate B is a ring g, in which engages a hook attached to a disk 8, on which are mounted four metal legs E being arched in an upward direction and then descending round the sides of the heating device. The said legs terminate at their ends in ,balls 2' or any other feet, and they are constructed so that they can be folded together, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.

A sliding ring or the like when raised into its proper position keeps the said legs E at their proper distances apart, so that they constitute supports for the upper and lower plates A and and B, united by the jointed arms 0.

An apparatus so constructed is placed, as shown'in Fig. 4, in a bed or the like, where the person is also perspiration. Coverings are then placed over the patient and the candle or lamp or the like is lighted. The heat generated by the flame is concentrated or confined in the space under the coverings and perspiration is quickly obtained as if in a sudatory or sweating-room.

When a sufficiently-high temperature has been obtained, the flame is extinguished by raising the base-plate of the apparatus with the hand, which by reason of its jointed arms can then approach the upper plate, so that the said flame is extinguished by the depending extinguisher.

This apparatus is very simple in construction, and besides being used for inducing perspiration, as described, may be also used as a warming-pan for warming beds.

The apparatus may be constructed'of various' sizes and shapes and of any suitable metal, and, if desired, may be decorated externally.

I claim-- An improved apparatus or means moting perspiration and for heating beds or the like consisting of two plates joined together by hinged arms so that the said plates may be caused to approach each other when desired the base plate having a socket or sconce for a candle or lamp or the like and a surrounding metal guard or chimney and the upper plate an extinguisher, the said apparatus being hung from legs constitutinga support and capable of being folded together and supporting a covering or coverings under which the person wishing to induce perspiration may be placed as in a sudatory substantially as hereinbefore described.
