- 6 represents the annular peripheral flange.
- 0 represents an inner circular flange.
- D represents the step,'which is provided with lips i, which engage with the sides of the doubletree in the same manner as the lips a engage with the singletree. It is provided with a center hub d, which journals in the annular flange c of the'upper coupling or bearing plate.
- Fig. 2 is a section- 9 represents an upwardlyprojecting peripheral flange on the step-bearing D, which forms a journal for the downwardly-projecting flange e of the coupling-plate.
- H represents a cap-plate. It is provided with the lips or flanges h, engaging the sides of the singletree and with the lugs or teats k, which are forced into the top of the singletree.
- G represents a bolt which couples the parts together. This bolt passes loosely through the hub d.
- the bearing-plates O D journal one upon the other and are held laterally in position by means of the annular flanges before described.

SINGLBTREE courLms.
I UNTTE STATES WILLIAM J. KAUFFMAN, OF MIAMISBURG, OHIO.
SlNGLETREE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,892, dated July 16, 1 895.
Application filed December 1894-.- Serial No. 530,932. (No model.)
' vention avoids these liabilities.
ment in position for use.
The features of my invention Will be more fully set forth inwthe description of the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improveon line as m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective .view of the singletree-cap. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the singletree-bearing. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the doubletree-step bearing.
A represents the singletree.
B represents the doubletree.
0 represents the bearing-plate of the singletree. It is provided with lips or flanges a, which embrace thesides of the singletree.
a represents ribs which are compressed into the wood and help to hold the bearing-plate in position. 6 represents the annular peripheral flange. 0 represents an inner circular flange. These parts engage with the bearing of the step-support in the following manner:
D represents the step,'which is provided with lips i, which engage with the sides of the doubletree in the same manner as the lips a engage with the singletree. It is provided with a center hub d, which journals in the annular flange c of the'upper coupling or bearing plate.
Fig. 2 is a section- 9 represents an upwardlyprojecting peripheral flange on the step-bearing D, which forms a journal for the downwardly-projecting flange e of the coupling-plate.
H represents a cap-plate. It is provided with the lips or flanges h, engaging the sides of the singletree and with the lugs or teats k, which are forced into the top of the singletree. G represents a bolt which couples the parts together. This bolt passes loosely through the hub d. The bearing-plates O D journal one upon the other and are held laterally in position by means of the annular flanges before described.
This makes a very strong durable coupling, which is made cheapand easily applied. The use of it avoids the difficulty of splitting or breaking of the singletree and doubletree; occasioned by the use of the couplings hitherto employed.
I claim- In a single-tree coupling, the combination with the single-tree and double-tree, of the step-bearing D having the hub d, upturned peripheral flange g and the lips i, the singletree bearing-plate 0 provided with inner and outer annular flanges c e on its under side and having on its upper side the lips a provided with ribs a, the single-tree cap plate H provided with lips h and lugs 70, and the through bolt G, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM J. KAUFFMAN. Witnesses:
W. A. REI'IER, A. F. GWINNER.
