SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 542,647, dated July 16, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WALTER JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bowling Green, in the county of Warren and State of Kentucky, have invented a certain new, useful, and valuable Improvement in Gates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention has relation to hinged gates adapted to be unlatched, opened, and secured open, and then closed and latched by means of a set of levers and suitable attachments;

and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View oftthe gate and attach- Fig. 2 is atop plan view of the gate.

The hinge-post 1 of the gate is provided with a pivoted arm 2, and the gate is provided with the pivoted arm 3. The ends of the said arms are pivoted together at point 4, and said arms extend'out from the gate and form an elbow. An angle-plate 5 is also pivoted to the arms at the pivot point 4. A red 6 connects one side of the said angle-plate 5 with the lower end of a lever 7, and the rod 8 connects the same side of the said angle-plate with the lower end of the lever 9. The levers 7 and 9 are fulcrumed on suitable uprights, the lever Tbeing beyond and on one side of the gate andthe lever 9 being beyond and on the opposite side of the gate. The upper ends of the said levers are connected by the rod 10. The other end of the angleplate 5 is connected by the rod ,11 with the shorter rods 12 and 13. The upper end of the rod 12 is pivoted to the gate above the latch, and the lower end of the rod 13 is pivoted to the latch, I

In operation the device works as follows: A rider on horseback or in a vehicle approaches the lever 7 and pushes the. lower end thereof forward. The rod 6 pushes forward and the rod 10 comes to the rear. Thus the lower end of the lever 9 goes forward and rod 8 pulls the plate 5 around on its pivotpoint. This draws the rod 11 back and said rod pulls on the ends of the rods 12 and 13, and thus the latch is lifted. Rod 8 then pulls on the arms 2 and 3 and the gate opens. When the gate is open the latch will fall in the catch on the post 14, and thus the gate is held open. The rider then goes through and pushes the lower end of the lever 9 back and the latch is lifted and the gate is closed. Should the rider first approach the lever 9 he pulls the lower end thereof forward and the gate is opened, and when he passes through he pushes the lower end of lever 7 back and the gate is closed.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr 1. In a gate a device for lifting the latch consisting of a rod secured at one end to the latch and at the other end to alaterally movable rod, a second rod secured at one end to the gate above the latch and at the other end to the said laterally movable rod, as set forth.

2. In a gate a device forlifting the latch consisting of a rod secured at one end to the latch and at the other end to a laterally movable rod; a second rod secured at one end to the gate above the latch and at the other end to the said laterally movable rod; a pivoted plate having one end of the laterally movable rod secured thereto, as set forth.

3. In a gate a device forlifting the latch consisting of a rod secured atone end to the latch and at the other end to a laterally movable rod, a second rod secured at one end to the gate above the latch and at the other end to the said laterally movable rod, a pivoted angle plate having one end of the laterally movable rod secured thereto, and a pull secured to the said angle plate on the opposite side of the pivot point, as set forth.

4. In a gate a device for lifting thelatch consisting of a rod secured at one end to the latch and at the other end to a laterally movable rod, a second rod secured at one end to the gate above the latch and at the otherend to the said laterally movable rod, a pivoted angle plate having one end of the laterally movable rod secured thereto, and a pull secured to the said angle plate on the opposite side of the pivot point, said pull secured at its other end to one end of a lever located beyond the gate and on one side thereof,a rod connecting the other end of said lever with one end of a similar lever located beyond the gate on the opposite side, and a rod connecting the other end of said second lever with the angle plate, as set forth.

5. A device for opening and closing-a gate consisting of an arm pivoted to the gate and an arm pivoted to the hinge post of the gate the ends of said arms being pivoted together, a rod secured to the pivot point of the arms and extending across the gate in one direction and a rod secured to the pivot point'of the arms and extending in the opposite direction from the first rod, asset forth.

6. A device for opening and closing a gate consisting of an arm pivoted t0=thev gate and an arm pivoted to the hinge post of the gatethe ends of said arms being pivoted together a rod secured to the pivot point of the arms andextending across the gate in one direction and a rod secured to the pivot point of the arms and extending in the opposite direc- L tion from the first rod; said rods respectively secured to an end of a lever, said levers 10-- ;eated one on each side of the gate, a rod con necting the other ends of the said levers, as
