WILLIAM M. WI-IITEHEAD, VOF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAM P-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters, Patent No. 542,455, dated July 9, 1895. Application iiled November 28, 1894. Serial No. 530,224. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may con/cern:
Be it known that I,`WILLIA M M. WHITE- HEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement in Lamp-Supports, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a lamp-support formed of a weighted base, a swinging or turning arm, a shell for concealing the Weight of the base, means for connecting the parts together, and novel bearing-surfaces for the boss of said arm, the construction and operation of the device being hereinafter described.
Figurewl represents a perspectiveview 0f a lamp-support embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of portion of the same on'an enlarged scale.
Similar letters of references indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a base on which is placed the weight or piece B of heavy material, which piece is secured to the base by the screw C, which is fitted to said piece from below and passed through the base, where its lower end is provided with a nut D, which is adapted to tighten against the wall of the recess E in the under side of said base.
F designates a shell, which, preferably of conical form, incloses the Weight Band rests on the base A, its upper end or apex having an opening through which passes the screwstem G, which rises from the Weight B.
H designates a rotating boss, which is litted on the end of the stem G above the shell, and
placement of the latter.
has secured to it the swinging arm J, on whose outer end is the socket or cap K, which sustains the lamp L, which may be of any suitable description, The stem Gprevents lateral displacement of the shell and the boss I-I prevents rising of the same. The upper end of the stem G has a threaded nipple G for the engagement of the nut M, which is adapted to overhang the wall of the boss H and prevent vertical dis- The portion G2 of the=stem G within the boss H Ais conical in form and the wall of the openingin said boss is similarly shaped, said portion thus forming the axis of the armJ and limiting the descent of the boss H and its pressure on the shell.
The portion of the under side of the boss H has a conical recess N, and the upper end P of the shell F is similarly shaped to enter said recess, thus providing a conical bearing for the boss on said shell, whereby said boss will turn more freely onrthe shell and have an increased bearing therein, while its axis proper is on the pin G.
It will be seen that the stand may be rested on a piano, table, bracket, mantel-piece circ., and firmly sustain the lamp without liability ot' the same to upset or overturn. The arm `.I may be swung or turned on its axis, so as to be placed in desired positions, while the lamp is set out from the base without liability of the latter casting a shadow in front of the same.
The nut M may be removed in order to displace the arm J, andthe nut D may be also removed in order to disconnect the base and weight, when so desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A lamp support consisting of a base, a weght'andshell thereon, a pin or screw rising from the weight through said shell, a boss on an axial portion of said screw, a nut on the upper end of said screw, and a lamp-supporting arm connected with said boss, the parts being combined substantially as described.
2. A base, a weight thereon, a screw connecting said baseand weight, a shell on the base inclosing said Weight,'a stem rising from the weight and passing through the apex of the shell, a rotary boss on the axial port-ion of said stem, and a nut on said stem over the boss, the parts named being combined substantially asY described.
3. In a lamp support substantially as described, a weighted base having a stem rising. from the same, and a swinging arm provided with a boss which has an axis onl said stem, the axial portion of said stem and contiguous wall of the boss being conical, the parts named being combined as stated.
4.. In a lamp support, a Weighted base and an inclosing shell, a stem rising from i the weight of the base, a boss onsaid stem, and a lamp -supporting arm connected withA said boss, the apex of the shell forming a conical bearing for said boss which rests thereon, the parts named being combined substantially as described.
WILLIAM M. WHITEHEAD.
