JOHN VICTOR BOYD-IVILSON, OF GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.
BRIDGE FLOORING','DECKING, ROOFING, 800.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,325, dated July 9, 1895. Application filed March 2, 1895. Serial No. 540,321. (No model.) Patented in England February 16, 1891, No. 2,791.
all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN VICTOR BOYD? WILSON, a subject of Victoria, Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Germiston Works, Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bridge Flooring, Decking, Roofing, Fire-Resisting Constructions, and the Like, and for Material in Use Therein, (for which I to have obtained apatent in Great Britain, No. 2,791, bearing date of February 16, 1891,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide more ready and eifective means for forming I 5 fire-resisting constructions, such as fioorings of buildings, deckings of piers and the like, bridge flooring, and for other purposes of a similar nature or for roofing.
In carrying out my said invention I propose to employ channel beams or girders of a poculiar section, so that the webs may abut close to each other if desired, and in combination with these a concrete specially prepared in blocks of peculiar shape and section, as shown, on accompanying sheet of drawings referring to w-hich Figurel is a section showing one method of construction with concrete blocks of double T- sectiorQ Fig. 2 is a section showing a heavier o flooring or construction, the concrete blocks .being of different section; and Fig. 3 is asection of channel-beam or girder rolled out fiat before being bent or drawn to shape shown 1) dotted lines.
channel iron and as shown in Fig. 3, and then lines or by A A B B, Figs. 1 and 2, the metal I 40 being in some cases fiat on the crown or it may be thickened out,'as A, or have a bulb on the under side, as B. The lower extremities of the Webs are vertical, as at O O, and terminate in internal flanges D D. These 5 channel or arched beams or girders are supported on suitable bearings across the space to be floored or covered, either close together, as in Fig. 1, or at distances apart, as in Fig. 2, and from or upon the flanges D D, I suspend or form concrete blocks of double T-section, such as E E. Over and between the metal beams I fill up to the requisite height with concrete prefer to use beams or girders rolled as F, the whole of which filling as well as the concrete blocking is composed as hereinafter described. The lower L-fianges of the blocks are longer than the upper T, so as to meet, or nearly so, under the metal, as at E, Fig. 1, and the whole of the under side of the construction is floated with finer concrete or mixture. When I find it desirable to place the beams at distances apart, as in Fig. 2, the suspended concrete blocks are of difierent sections, such as H Hsupporting at H H flat slabs, such as J J, the concrete being filled in between, around, and over the girders as I compose my special concrete for use in these constructions of a material known as kieselgu hr or diatomitef either alone or in combination with Portland or other cement and with suitable aggregate, and I find in practice that the following proportions are the most suitable. The parts or proportions are by measurement, not weight.
No 1. Four parts broken hard burned bricks, burned ballast, slag, or the like; one and one-half parts clean cinders or clinkers; one and one-half parts Portland or other comout; one part diatomite or kieselguhr.
No. 2. Five parts broken hard burned bricks, burned ballast, burned shale, slag or the like; two parts clean cinders or clinkers; two parts Portland or other cement; one part diatomite or kieselguhr.
No. 3. Five parts broken hard burned bricks, burned ballast, burned shale, or the like; one'and one-half parts clean cinders or clinkers; one and one-fourth parts Portland or other cement; three-fourths part diatomite or kieselguhr.
No. 4. Three and one-half parts broken hard burned bricks, burned ballast, burned shale or the like; three and one-half-parts clean cinders or clinkers; two parts Portland or other cement; one part diatomite or kieselguhr.
This form of construction may also be applied to Mansard and pitched roofing, partitions, and the like. 7 Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is-' In combination the girders of inverted U shape having integral inwardly turned In witness whereof I have hereunto set my flanges, and the concrete blocks between the hand in presence of two witnesses. sides of said girder, said blocks having 7 T grooves in their upper portions to receive the JOHN VICIOR B01 D'WILbON' 5 inwardly turned flanges, the base portions of \Vitnesses:
said blocks extending under the said flanges, WILLIAM SHAW, substantially as described. HUGH MCDOUGALL.
