J. H. GLAUBER.
BASIN 000K.
No. 542,251. Patented July 9, 18.95.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
JOSEPH H. GLAUBER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
BASIN-COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,251, dated July 9, 1895.
Application filed February 6, 1895 To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. GLAUBER, a citizen of the-United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Basin-Cocks; andIdo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has reference to basin-cocks; and the object of the invention is to provide a cock for basins in which the usual upwardly-closing valve and side handle on a horizontal spindle are used, substantially as herein shown, or the equivalent thereof with side handle or lever and in conjunction therewith a rotatable delivery-spout.
Heretofore basin-cocks on which the invention is an improvement, and which has the spout set opposite the valve-handle and nonadjustable, necessarily were made in what are known as rights and lofts, thereby adapting them to be set on the right and left hand sides, respectively, of the basin. In that case the discharge-spout wasimmovable laterally and every other Way, except to be taken out, andhence rights and lofts were necessary, and both kinds had to be manufactured and carried in stock, and in 'no case could one be made to serve in the place of the other. Obviously, this was objectionable and often embarrassing and expensive. I therefore conceived the idea of overcoming this objection and providing a cock which 1 would be adaptable to any position in a basin,
and take the place of the rights and lofts hitherto in use. To this end I preserved the body of the cock substantially as it has been heretofore used, except as modified to incorporate my improvement, and have incorpo- Serial No. 637,519. (No model.)
and 4 are elevations of details as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the base of the cock, which is set into the basin-slab and receives the water-pipe connections, and B is the barrel or body of the cock. These parts are shown as screwed together, and the barrel B has a seat at or in its lower portion 'for the valve 0. This valve has a stem 2, engaged at its top by the eccentric extremity I of the operating rotating spindle D, having handle E rigid upon its outer ends. The innerend of said spindle D is formed out of direct or .axial line, so as to give it the eccentric bearing referred to, whereby the said valve is raised and lowered.
The spindle D is packed to avoid leakage, and a spring 5 of U shape is engaged through the valve-stem 2 and makes frictional engagement in the throat 7 of the barrel B to avoid possible hammering or rattling of the valve. Now, in order further to carry out my invention, as shown in this particular instance or example thereof, I form the upper part of barrel B with a ground or turned socket 8, adapted to seat the head G, which carries the delivery-spout H. This elbow has an open passage-way through from end to end and a discharge out through the right-angled arm 10, and is locked and held in adjusted position in the socket 8 by means of the headed tubu lar or barrel-bolt N. This bolt is shown in detail in Fig. 3, in which lateral scarfs or slots 12 are disclosed, forming outlets for the water that passes up through the bolt and is discharged in the bulb 14 of the elbow, whencethe water finds its way freely out through The said bolt has a neath the socket 8.
In Fig.2 the idea of the invention is clearly disclosed. There the spout H is shown in one position in full lines and in another or opposite positionvin dotted lines, according as it serves right or left in the basin. It may be set at any desired angle in respect to the handle E and the basin, and when set is fastened so as to stay permanently in that position. Some too people like to have the water delivered at the side of the basin, so as to keep the spout out of the way, and this can be done by my improved construction. Obviously, there are several modifications of this construction which could be suggested and would serve my purpose and are within the scope of my invention, but the present construction is preferred.
The right-angled arm 10 ofthe head hecomes a part of the delivery-spout proper in this case.
I am aware that it is not broadly new in basin-cocks to have a rotating delivery-spout, and this I do not broadly claim. There are many that rotate and that turn the flow of water on or off in the same operation; but in all such cases, so far as I am aware, the delivery-spout serves also to actuate the valve or valve mechanism, and there is no separate valve-controlling stem and handle and furnishing a cock adaptable as this one is. This invention relates to a u holly-different variety of basin-cock from those referred to, and has to do exclusively with the variety or class in which the valve mechanism is entirely independent of the discharge-spout. Indeed, it has to do specifically with the style of basincocks which have handles at the sides, after the character of the accompanying drawings, and my improvement is designed to popularize this style of basin-cocks by relieving them of the objection of always being made and carried in pairs for right and left service, and of the other disadvantages which accompany their use. a
A further advantage of my improvement is found in the facility with which it may be taken apart to remove obstructions or to make repairs. In the old style of cock. for example, it obstruction occurred or repair was necessary, the only place of detachment was between parts A and B, but to rotate B to un screw it was also necessary to release the spout, as it would engage against the side of the basin and prevent turning. To remove the spout special tools which a plumber alone had were necessary, and so there was much labor and expense in getting the cock apart and back again in position. By my construction all this is remedied, because the entire cock can be taken apart with an ordinary wrench and by an unskilled person, and this alone is of great advantage to the user and of manifest valve to the public.
I claim- 1. A basin cock havinga valve and a handle therefor, in combination with the head -G- having elbow 10-- integral therewith and seated to be horizontally rotated to any desired angle in respect to said handle, and a threaded barrel N- through head --G engaging the body of the faucet to fasten the head G in position, substantially as set forth.
2. The faucet described consisting of the body part --B having a valve seat, the valve C-, the horizontal spindle --D connected with the valve stem and having handle-E-, in combination with the horizontally rotatable head G- provided with a socket portion 8 seated in the top of body B-- and the hollow bolt N to secure head -G-- in place, substantially as set forth.
3. The construction described comprising the body -B- having a ground socket in its top and a valve and valve handle supported thereon, in combination with the head G seated in said socket and having the spout projection 10 rigid therewith, and the barrel shaped bolt -N extending through part G- from the top and engaging in body -B below the socket therein, substantially as set forth.
Witness my hand to the foregoing specification this 2lst day of January, 1895.
