LATHING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,098, dated July 2, 1895. A plication filed July 20, 1894. Serial No. 518,121- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARSHALL O. N IoHoLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Viroqua, in the county of Vernon and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lathing; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in laths to be secured to buildings or other structures to receive the mortar employed in forming walls and ceilings.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of laths which, when secured in place, will have formed between them an angular or zigzag space to receive the mortar, which will be securely keyed therein.
The invention consists essentially in a lath having at each side, diagonally opposite to .each other, a tongue extending from end to end and of a thickness less than half of that of the lath, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lath constructed in accordance with myinvention: Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a series of laths when in use, showing how the mortar is keyed between the same.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a lath of proper size, formed at each side, diagonally opposite each other, with a tongue 2, extending from end to end thereof and of a thickness less than one-half that of the lath. The thickness of the tongue is preferably one-third that of the lath, but it may be varied somewhat, so long as it is less than half that of the lath, so that a space will be formed when the laths are secured in A lath constructed as above can be manu- I factured very rapidly and cheaply, and by means of the peculiar shape of the spaces be tween the same when in use the mortar will be securely keyed therein.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim is 1. As an improved article, a lathing composed of laths each havingaat each side a rectangular tongue. extending from end to end thereof, diagonally opposite the one on the edge of the other and of a thickness less than half that of the lath, the laths secured in place so that there will be formed between them two vertical spaces and an intersecting horizontal recess. r
2.' The combination with a building, of the laths, each consisting of a strip having tongues at each side diagonally oppositeto each other and of a thickness less than half that of the lath, said laths being secured to the buildinga short distance from each other forming two vertical spaces andan intersecting horizontal recess, and the mortar inserted in said recesses, substantially as described.
