SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,021, dated July 2, 1895. Application filed January 21, 1895. $erial No. 535,699. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANTOINE J. LANGELIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Swaging-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improved means employed to effect a closing or opening movement of the swaging-dies while the machine is in operation; and it consists in the employment of an adjustable toggle-link between the swaging-die and the roller engaging block, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the machine with the face-plate removed.

Fig. 4 represents an axial section, and Fig. 5 a side view, of the toggle-link which is interposed between the swaging-die and the roller-engaging block. Fig. 6 represents an enlarged detail view of the connecting-head, by means of which the toggle-link is actuated to cause the opening or closing movement of the die.
In the drawings, A represents a stationary head, in which is journaled thedie-holding spindle B, to which rotary motion is imparted by means of the pulley O. The head A is provided with the beating-rollers a a which are adapted for engagement with the sliding blocks D D to cause the proper reciprocation of the dies EE, the said engaging blocks and dies being loosely held in the diametrical groovej, made in the enlarged forward end of the holding-spindle B, and between the dies E E and the engaging blocks D D are placed the toggle-links F F, the said links consisting of the block a, fitting in the cylindrical recess or socket b in the block D, and the block a, fitting in the recess or socket b in the die E, the said blocks a and a being con-' nected to each other to form the toggle-link by means of the cylindrical pin 0, which fits into the cylindrically curved recess 0' 0', made in the adjacent sides of the blocks a and a, and the said blocks a and a are secured to each other and to the pin 0 by means of the washers d d, which are placed upon the projecting ends of the pin 0, and are provided with the circular flange d, which onters the circular grooves 01 d made in the ends of the blocks a and a to receive the same, the parallel sides 5 of the said washers (1 cl being held in the recesses e e in the opposite sides of the openingf, made in the head g, Fig. 6, so that upon the movementof the said head g back and forth a corresponding move ment will be imparted to the central joint of the toggle-link F. The head 9 is provided with a shank h, which passes loosely through a perforation '0', made in the die-holding spindle B, and is secured to the sliding sleeve G, the said sliding sleeve being provided with a groove lain which is placed the loose ring 11, to which operative connection is made from a treadle by means of the toggle-jointed arms m m, the arm m being jointed to the ring H by means of the screw hand the arm mjointed to the bearing-standard o of the head A by means of the screw 77/ and to the middle jointn is attached the downwardlyextending link 19, which is connected with the treadle, the said link and treadle being caused to rise by means of a spiralor othersuitable springq, and upon the downward movement of the treadle by the operator of the machine the sleeve G will be thrown forward, thus forcing forward the central joints of the toggle-links FF and changing their angular position, whereby the distance between the engaging blocks D l) and the working faces of the dies E E will be increased, so that the dies at the impact of the beatingrollers a a will be brought nearer togetherthan before.
The several parts are held in position in the groove j of the die-holding spindle by means of the face-plate J, which is secured to the front face of the spindle B by means of screws. When the axes of the blocks a a and the pin 0 are in the same right line, as shown in Fig. 3, the dies will be carried to their extreme inward position, and the toggle-links will transmit the impulse received from the beating-rollers to the dies without lateral thrust, and a u niform beating distance will be attained at the completion of the'closing movement of the dies upon the work, which is an important feature.
I claim as my invention-- 1. In a swaging machine, the combination of the rotating head, the boaters, the swaging dies, and the engaging blocks, with theintermediate toggle-links, and means for changing the angle of the toggle-links while the machine is in operation, substantially as described.
2. In a swaging machine, the combination of the rotating head, the heaters, the swaging dies, and the engaging blocks, with the intermediate toggle-links, and the slidable heads for changing the angle of the toggle-links, while the machine is in operation, substantially as described.
3. In a swaging machine, the combination of the rotating head, the heaters, the swaging dies, and the engaging-blocks with the togglelinks, provided attheir central joints with the cylindrical pin, and the Washers which engage with the sides of the toggle-links, substantially as described.
