SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,889, dated July 2, 1895.
Application filed October 3,1894. Serial No. 524,789. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. STEEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the countv of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Luggage-Carriers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing my device properly attached for use. Fig. 2 is a section through line c 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the drum or cylinder. Fig. 4 is a view showing. the knob and its spindle together with the toothed bar or band, also showing a portion of the binding strap. Fig. 5 is a section showingthe spindle bearing and stop properly located for disengaging the teeth. Fig. 6 is a detached view of the spindle bearing and stop. Fig. 7 is a view, showing the bracket connection. Fig. 8 is a view sh owing the knob bar before the same is bent.
The present invention has relation to luggagecarriers and it consists in the different parts, and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the attaching arm which is attached to a bicycle handle bar standard by means of the clamp a, and suitable clamping bolts 19. To the opposite end of the arm A, is attached the cylinder or drum B by means of the flange c or its equivalent. The flange c, is provided with the arm d; the top or upper end of which.
is provided with the socket d, which socket is for the purpose of attaching the bar 0 by means of the connecting pin (1 The bar 0 and at the same time assisting in preventing the article from slipping endwise.
The knob D, is substantially of the form shown in the drawings, and is formed somewhat larger in diameter than the diameterof the drum or cylinder B. The knob D is provided with the spindle E, to which spindle is attached the inner end of the binding strap F. To the end of the spindle is attached the bearing G, which bearing is located and arranged substantially as shown in Fig. 2, said bearing and spindle being held in proper position by means of the aperture g, the opposite end of the spindle being held by means of the flange h, which flange is formed upon the knob D, and embraces a portion of the periphery of the drum, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
The open end of the drum B is provided with the inclined teeth k, which inclined teeth are for the purpose hereinafter described.
The toothed bar H is originally formed as illustrated in Fig. 8, and as shown it is provided with the inclined teeth In, which teeth are formed of a size and shape to correspond substantially with the size and shape of the teeth 70. The bar H is also provided with the attaching tangs M, which attaching tangs are for the purpose of securely attaching the bar H to the knob D, after said bar has been bent into a circle as illustrated in Fig. 4, said bar beinglocated as illustrated in said Fig. 4, when placed in proper position for use.
The spindle bearing G, is extended through the aperture 9, as illustrated in Fig. 2, when the teeth and 70' are brought into engagement, at which time the spindle E is held againstfotation. The outer end of the bearing G is provided with the flange 70 which flange is for the purpose of limiting the pulling movement of the knob D, and its spindle E, said flange being so located with reference to the knob D, that it will stop said knob by coming in contact with the outer face of the drum head I, at the time the teeth 70 and 7s are disengaged from each other thereby allowing the knob D, and its spindle E to rotate to wind or unwind the binding strap F.
For thepurpose of holding the teeth 70 and is out of engagement with each other the annular groove 70 is formed upon the periphery of the spindle bearing G and adjacent to the flange k The groove 70, is for the purpose of temporarily holding the teeth 70 and 70' out of engagement during the time the knob and its spindle is rotated, by means of one edge of the aperture g being received in the groove, as illustrated in Fig. 5.
For the purpose of permitting the knob to be easily moved toward the drum, the bottom of the groove k is inclined, thereby providing an incline so that the bearing G will enter or move endwise through the aperture 9, and assume the position illustrated in Fig. 2.
For the purpose of causing the teeth 70 and 7a to easily interlock, the edges 70 and 7c ,are inclined as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 8. For

attaching the binding strap F, the hook K, and the ring K are provided. For the purpose of protecting the strap at the point where it leaves the cylinder or drum B, through the aperture 13', the curved flange a is provided.
For the purpose of holding the binding strap so as not to interfere with the teeth 70 and k, the flange a is provided, which flange is located substantially as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. For the purpose of properly holding the bearing G upon the end of the spindle E, the screw b is provided, and is located substantially as shown in Fig. 2.
For the purpose of securely binding the bearing G, upon the spindle E, said spindle is preferably formed tapering as illustrated in Fig. 2.
It will be understood that by cushioning the cross-bars f, that all rattle will be dispensed with, and at the same time better holding the article in place.
The inner periphery of the bearing G, is formed to correspond with the taper of the spindle E, thereby formingasnug attachment.
For the purpose of causing the knob D, together with its spindle to be drawn toward the toothed end of the drum and thereby hold the teeth secured to the knob in engagement with the teeth formed on the open end of the drum, said drum is so located with reference to its aperture B and the hook K, that when thestrap-is brought over the article to be carried, it will pull at an angle when tightened.
The hook K is held and supported by the bar O, to which bar said hook is securely attached, or if desired said hook may be formed integral with the bar 0.
By .providing the inclined edges upon the teeth 7c and 70', said teeth will be held againstdisengagement, and cannot be disengaged except by a longitudinal movement of kn'ob D, and its spindle E.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a frame or rack, the arm A, carrying the drum or cylinder B, provided with the teeth 7c, the knob D, having fixed thereto the toothed band H, provided with the teeth is, the spindle E, having attached thereto a binding strap, the bearing G provided with the flange k and the groove 70 and the hook K, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a supporting frameprovided with an arm, having fixed thereto a drum provided with teeth, a knob provided with an annular flange and a toothed bar, a spindle secured to the knob and having fixed thereto a binding strap,provided with a ring or loop, a bearing located upon the spindle and provided upon its outerend with a flange or stop, agroove formed upon said bearing, and provided with aninclined bottom located adjacent to the flange or stop, the arm d carrying the bar 0, provided with the diverging arms (2, and a hook K, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of a luggage carrying frame or rack provided with an arm carrying a drum provided with teeth, a knob provided with a spindle, a binding strap, provided with the ring K or its equivalent secured to the spindle, the bar H, provided with the tangs 70 and the teeth is, having inclined edges, the teeth Ir, provided withincliried edges, and the hook K or its equivalent, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4:. In a luggage carrier, the combination of a drum having located therein a rotating spindle, having secured thereto a binding strap,
said spindle leadingthrough the cylinderand movable longitudinally to engage and disengage the teeth 70 and 70', a stop to limit the longitudinal movement of the spindle located upon the bearing G, and the groove 7):, to temporarily hold the teeth out of engagement and a hook, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
