J. A. DUNNING.
COLLAR BUTTON SHIELD.
No. 541,809. Pa tentedJune 25, 1895.
WITNESSES I JV V'EJV' T OR .dttorney FFICE.
JAMES A. DUN NING, OF AULANDER, NORTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE HALF TO ROBERT J. DUNNING, OF SAME PLACE.
COLLAR-BUTTON SHIELD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,809, dated June 25, 1895.
Application filed January 24,1895. Serial No. 536,067- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES A; DUNNING, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of Aulander, in the county of Bertie and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Button Shields; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
r5 Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings are representations of the invention applied. Fig. 3 is a side view of the invention applied. Fig. at
is a perspective View of the invention. Fig.
5 illustrates method of manufacturing shields. The object of this invention is to provide means of improved character for use in connection with collar buttons forthe purpose of relieving the neck of the wearer from the pressure and irritation of the button.
As is well known, the ordinary collar buttons are a source of great discomfort by reason of their action upon the flesh at the back of the neck, often resulting in serious sores the danger and discomfort of which are increased by the liability of poisoning from the brass or other metal of the button. This is entirely obviated by the present invention, which provides a shield capable of being applied to the various forms of buttons commonly in use,
and which can be manufactured and sold at a very small cost.
\Vith this object in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claim.
The invention more particularly consists in a shield constructed of two superimposed flexible disks A and B, of suitable form and of a diameter appreciably greater than the 5 base of the button, secured to each other by stitching or cement, the upper one having therein a central aperture a, to each side of which extends a narrow slit 1). The central aperture a, receives the shank of thebutton,
while theradial slits b'permit the insertion of 56 the base between the two disks, after which the upper disk closes down upon and covers said base. In securing the disks together, they are stitched or cemented at the marginal portion only, and they are left unsecured at opposite sides, as indicated at c, c, for the purpose of allowing them to spring or yield apart at these points to facilitate the insertion of the button base. The disks may be made of any material suitable for the purpose, sheep skin, kid, or other kinds of soft leather being excellent.
In manufacturing the shields, I take two narrow strips P, P of the material, the-up per of which has the apertures a, and the slits b cut therein, and secure them together along their longitudinal margins by stitching or cement, as indicated in Fig. 5. From this the shields are out by a suitable die or cutter. Each shield so out has the disks unsecured upon two opposite sides, as above described.
It will be apparent that this shield forms an efficient protector for the tender parts upon which the base of the button commonly bears, and saves the wearer all discomfort therefrom. It also serves to hold the stifi collar band away from the back of the neck which is often another source of discomfort.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the herein described shield for collar buttons, consisting of two superimposed soft and thin flexible disks of greater diameter than the base of the 85 button, and secured to each other at their marginal portions only, said marginal portions being left unsecured at opposite points, and slits in the upper .of said disks to admit the base and shank of the button, substanc tially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES A. DUNNING. Witnesses:
PHILIP C. MASI, GEORGE H. PARMELEE.
