A. C. PRICE. PUMP ROD AJUSTERl No. 541,680. Y Patented June 25, 1895.
UNITED STATESv PATENT f OFFICE.
ALLEN C. PRICE, OF RENFREW, PENNSYLVANIA.
PUMP-ROD ADJUSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Lettel Patent NO. 541,680, dated. J' une l25, 1895.
Application filed March l2, 1895. Serial No. 541,482. I (No model.) I
To @ZZ whom it may concer-71,:
Be it known that I, ALLEN C. PRICE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Renfrew, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump-Rod Adjusters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification. o
My invention relates to improvements vin means for adjusting and clamping the pistonrods of deep-Well pumps'to thereciprocating tubes by which said rods are operated; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same, whereby the piston-rod may be securely clamped to the tube, without any danger of being accidentally displaced, and without any liability of the clamping-screws being broken, or the surface of the piston-rod injured by points of screws, during the operation of the pump; yet, at the same time, permitting of the rod being loosened, and adjusted when desired.v
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional View of a clamping-mechanism .constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 isa horizontal section on the line Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detail view, in perspective, of the lipped gib, removed from its seat in the recessed clamping-sleeve.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates a tubeprovided with a cross' head 2 at its upperend, having trunnions 3, and an eye 4, as usual. The lower end of this tube is screw-threaded to engage with the correspondingly threaded end of a sleeve 5,
extension, at its lower end, is formed'with anv inwardly-extending flange 7, and at its upper end with a slot 8; and this slot intersects at right angles a vertical recess 8a, made in the sleeve adjacent to the piston-rod. Located within this recess is a gib 9, the upper end of which is formed or provided with an outwardly-extending lug or lip 10, which passes through the slot 8 at the upper end of the extension, and'rests upon the latter, while the lower end of the gib rests upon the flange at theJ bottom of the extension. The extension 7, at its outerside, is provided with bosses 12, through which pass set-screws 13, the inner ends of which bear against the gib, and force it tightly against the rod, clamping the latter between the sleeve and gib.
The bore of the sleeve isvmade angular, for the vpurpose of securing a rmor grip; but this is not essential, as the sleeve and gib may be made cylindrical, so as to correspond with the rod. f Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim is The combination, in a pump-rod adjuster of the described type, with the tubular suckerrod 1 and the'piston-rod 1 inserted movably therein, of the clamping-sleeve 5 provided with the interior vertical recess 8a and horizontal slot 8 intersecting said recess at its upper end, and having the inwardly-extending flange 7 and lateral outwardly-projecting extension 6, in combination with the lipped gib V9 and clamping-screws 13; as and for the purpose herein shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature /infpresence of two witnesses.
Y ALLEN C. PRICE.
