'J; CLIFFORD &'J. H. GAVIN.
BATH TUB.
No. 541,469. Patented Ju e 25, 1 895.
W; TN Ess ES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN CLIFFORD AND JOHN H. GAVIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS TO THE L. WOLFF MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BATH-TUB.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 541,469, dated June 25, 1895.
Application filed September 4, 1894. Serial No. 522,039. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern;
Be it known that we, JOHN CLIFFORD and JOHN H. GAVIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bath-Tubs, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in the construction of bath tubs and faucets therefor.
Heretofore it has been customary to make bath tubs with a straight or flat wall at one end-the end where the double faucet is mounted, so that the two parallel tail pieces of the double faucet may extend squarely through the wall of the bath tub, and the jam nuts fit properly against -the same. It is very desirable for convenience and economy in the manufacture of the tub to keep the double faucet from projecting in the way in the main portion of the tub and to enable the tub to be of a symmetrical outline or shape, that both end walls of the tub should be curved. WVe have discovered that this result may be accomplished by combining with the faucet is mounted.
*In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a plan view of a bath-tub embodying our invention; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail plan, partly in section.
In the drawings A represents the tub having a curved back or end wall a. at the place where the faucet is mounted as well as its front end a.
B is the double or combination faucet having two tail pieces D D secured to the faucet B in the usual manner by threaded nipples C and to the bath tub by the clamp nuts D D, one fitting on the inner wall and the other on the outer wall of the tub A. The tail pieces D D are curved or bent at d d to compensate for the curvature of the back walla of the tub, so that the threaded nipples C C may be parallel to each other and to the longitudinal axis of the tub while the portion of each of the tail pieces D which extend through the tub A may be at right angles to the curved Wall of the tub at such point. This enables the face of thejam nuts D D to fit flat and properly against the inside and outside walls of the tub notwithstanding the curvature thereof. This is clearly shown in Fig. 2 at the sectional part of said figure.
We claim- 1. The combination with a bath tub having a curved back wall of a double or combination faucet provided with two divergent tail pieces, each extending through the curved back wall of said tub at right angles thereto and each connected by screw threaded nipples with said double faucet, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a tub or vessel A having a curved back wall ofa double or combination'faucet having two curved or bent tail pieces D D extending divergently to each other through said curved back wall each at right angles thereto, screw threaded parallel nipples C C and jam nuts D D on each of said tail pieces embracing the curved back wall of said tub, substantially as specified.
