UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE...I
MARTIN II. MARCUS AND WALTER O. COLLINS, O F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS; SAID COLLINS ASSIGNOR TO SAID MARCUS.
STAIR-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,244, dated J une 18, 1895.
Application tiled March 14, 1895. Serial No. 541,674. (No model) .To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that We, MARTIN H. MARCUS and WALTER O. COLLINS, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stair-Pads; and We do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to 1o make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improvement in stair padsf-one object of the invention be' ing to so construct a stair pad that the iinished article will present no rough edges,
t5 hem, or exposed seams.
A further object is to construct a stair pad in such manner that the case covering part 'will serve to effectually retain the filling part in proper shape.
A further object is to so construct a stair pad that the elastic lilling, base and nose will be completely inclosed by the covering part.
A further object is to provide means whereby to inclose the base and filling of a pad in a covering part and seal the mouth or open.
ing in the latter through which the base and filling are inserted, Without the use of stitching.
A further object is to produce a stair pad 3o which can be cheaply manufactured; which shall be neat in appearance; which will retain its shape and which shall be eectual, in all respects, in the performance of its functions.
A further object is to so construct a covering case part fora stair pad, that it shall constitute an envelope for the reception of the base, filling and nose, into which said base and, filling can be readily inserted, and to 4o provide said covering case part with a pocket or flap constructed and adapted to be made to close the mouth of the envelope and have its free edge secured Without 'the use of stitching. 'lith these objects in view the invention consists in a covering case part for a stair pad, constructed in the form of an envelope having an open mouth and provided with a pocket or flap adapted to close said mouth.
The invention also consists in the combina- 5o tion with a base part having a curved nose at one edge, of an elastic iilling disposed on said base'part, and a flexible case covering part inclosing the base part Vand filling, the mouth of the case covering part being sealed to the under face of the base part at the nose portion of the latter; and the invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims. '6o
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of the envelope detached. Fig. l isa transverse sectional view of this envelope. Fig. 2 is a bottom perspective showing the pad before the nosing is formed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional vien7 of the completed pad. Fig. 4 is a similar view of a modification. f
Our improved stair pad comprises a stit base part A, at one edge of which a curved 7e nose A is formed as hereinafter explained.
A case covering part B, and an elastic filling C, preferably of Ycarded cotton, or other suitable elastic filling may be employed.
The case covering part B, is preferably made of muslin or cotton fabric and is constructed in the form of an envelope having an open mouth d at one of its longitudinal edges. One side of the case covering partI is somewhat wider than the other andthe flap 8o b thus left. is turned over and secured atits ends to form a sort of pocket disposed coincident to the mouth of the envelope.
` The elastic illing part C is placed on the stiff cardboard base part, and before the filling'part is thus placed in position the base part may, if desired, be coated with a sizing, but that is not essential.
W'e prefer to make one layer of the carded cotton or elastic filling Wider than the rest 9o and and turn the edge of the Wider layer over one edge of the base part and cause it to lie against the under face thereof. If desired the elastic filling may be made to completely cover both faces of the base part.
The stiff base part having the elasticfilling thereon is inserted into'the case covering part or envelope, through the mouth thereof. The Hap b will then be turned over the open edge of the pad. The case covering part is then roo drawn tight over the base and filling, and edge d of the mouth and the edge of the flap b secured to the base part at e, by means of suitable sizing or glue. Thus securing the covering part to the base part servesalso as an effectual means for closing the mouth of the former. The curved nose A will then be formed at the edge of the pad through which the base Aand filling have been inserted, in any suitable manner, so as to cause the sealed edges e of the covering part to be on the under face of the nose, where they will be practically hidden from view. The seams at the ends of the covering part are made inside the same, so that in the finished pad, no rough edges, seams or herns Will be exposed to view and the neat appearance of the pad will be thus greatly enhanced.
By constructing and arranging the parts as above described, the covering part can be made to tit so secu relyover the stiff base part and filling that when the mouth of the said covering part is closed and sealed by sizing as above explained the covering part will hold the elastic filling securely in place without the `use of stitching, tufting or quilting, the covering part bearing tightly against the filling Where it overlaps the edge of the base'. Such a result could not be accomplished if the mouth of the covering part be closed by stitching as allowance would have to be made for a seam, and When it is necessary to make such allowance in cutting the material of which the covering partl is composed, the covering part, in the finished article would be slack and the object attained by our irnprovements Would be frustrated. To secure the covering part to the stiff card board base by means of stitching would result disadvantageously; first, because the card board would become broken at the edges and thus render the pad practically useless; second, because the card board would have to be so light as to fail to properly perform the functions which are expected of it, and, third, because considerable'e-Xpense would bc entailed. The mouth of the covering part might be made at one end if desired.
Our invention results in the production of a pad which is not only cheap to manufacture, but which is neat in appearance, not liable to become deranged, durable and eectual in all respects in the performance of its functions.
Our improved covering part can be conveniently employed With a stair pad having a stiff nose A' and Without a stiff base part, as shown in Fig. 4,-the flap b and edge of the mouth of the covering part being secured to the under face of the stiff nose, as above described.
Having fully described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Let` ters Patent, is
1. In a stair pad, the, combination with a stiff base part and an elastic filling, of a covering part constructed and adapted to receive the base and elastic filling, and a ap secured to the base 'part and sealing the mouth of the covering part, substantially as set forth.
2'. In a stair pad, the combination with a stiff base part having a curved nose at one edge, and an elastic filling,of'a covering part made in the form ofan envelope and inclosing the base and filling, said covering part having a mouth tor the insertion of the base and filling and a Hap to close said mouth, one edge of said mouth and the flap being glued to the under face of the nose, substantially as set forth.
3. In a stair pad, the combination with an elastic filling and a stiff nose,y of a covering part inclosing said filling and nose and having a tlap, said ap and the edge of the mouth of the covering part being secured to the under face of the stiff nose, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof We have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
