SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 541,055, dated June 11, 1895.
To all whom it may concern.-'
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. REAMY,-Of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvescribe it, in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved harness-saddle and pads. sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of one end of the harness-saddle. Fig. 4 is atop plan view of one of the pads. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the pads.
. Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the harness saddle, the same being constructed with the vertical sides 2 and base 3. The saddle has the ordinary rounded apex 4, upon which is rigidly fixed the check-rein hook 5. The ends of the saddle 1 are widened as indicated by the nu meral 6,and apertures oropenings 7are formed in said widened portion directly opposite each other. In the vertical side portions 2 of this widened portion 6 are segmental cutaway portions 8 adapted to form bearings.
Slots 9 are formed in the extreme ends of the saddle 1. beyondt'he aperture 7 are for the purpose of receiving the straps 10 that are secured to the ends of the one belly band or under-girth ll.
The pads of my improved harness saddle are constructed of rectangular rounded faced blocks 12, the same being of Wood, or analogous material. The pads so constructed are covered with sheets of lead, aluminum, or analogous material 15, said sheets of lead, 850., being bent over the top surface of the blocks 12 and there held in position by tacks or screws 16. The pad is now given a finished appearance by securing on its top surface ornamental leather, &c., 17.
Rigidly secured to the top surface of the pads by means of screws 18, or in any suitable manner, are metallic clips 19, the same being provided with the semi-circular base portions 20, vertical portions21 and horizontal portion 22. Thus a loop 23 is formed upon the top surface of the pad.

screw-threaded lug 25, securely. positionedupon the horizontal portion 22 of the loop 2 3. In placing the pads upon the harness saddle, the rings 24 are first passed through the apertures or slots 7 in the lower ends of theSIid-"- loops 23, thus forming means for securely holding the pads in position upon the saddle by two bands or girths only.
I By reason of the bearings 8 and the semicircular portions 20 of the clips 19, the pads will be perfectly free to rock at all times in order to adjust and position themselves upon a horses back during use, no strap being in the way. r
It is my intention to construct the saddle of aluminum, thereby producing a saddle that is lightin weight, of a pleasing and desirable appearance, easily cleaned and thorough and efficient in use.
By forming the pads of wood, wood pulp, paper, or analogous material, said pads will not absorb moisture, 850., which, it has been found, is productive of deleterious results. It is well known that ordinarylead contains peculiar curative qualities. By covering the surface of the pads with sheets of lead, said pads can be used with entirely satisfactory results upon the raw and galled backs of horses.
Thus it will be seen how I have constructed a simple, durable, eificient and convenient harness saddle and pads.
What I claim is The improved harness saddle, comprising the bridge piece 1 having the rounded apex 4 and the widened ends 6 in which are formed openings or slots 7, the vertical side portions 2 of said widened ends having segmental cutaway portions 8, the extreme ends of the said bridge piece beyond the openings 7 having slots 9, to which one of the belly bands or girths is to be attached, suitable pads, a loop 23 secured on each pad and projecting loosely up through the adjacent opening 7 of said bridge piece to a point above the upper surface thereof, a rein-ring 24E fixed upon the projecting portion of said loop in a plane above the upper surface of said bridge piece, and another belly band or girth 26 passed through said loop beneath said rein-ring but upon the upper surface of said bridge piece, whereby the pads are perfectly free at all times to rock, substantially as herein specified.
