ROBERT HENRY VERITY, OF BRANTFORD, CANADA, ASSlGNOR TO THE VERITY PLOW COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,929, dated June 11, 1895. Application filed October 9, 1894. Scriai No. 525,346. (No model.) Patented in Canada August 2, 1894, No. 46,715.
To whom it may concern] Be it known that I, ROBERT HENRY VERITY,
' of the city of Brantford, in the county of Brant,
in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jaws and Olevises for Plows, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in in the jaws and yet be capable of adj ustment' in such position to suit the line of draft required; and it consists essentially in providing a notched quadrant within the jaws through which the pivot pin of the clevis ex tends, thev inner end of theclevis being arranged to engage with one of the notches of the quadrant and a supplemental pin being also provided to extend preferably through one of the outer circle of holes in the jaws and one of the adjusting notches of the quadrant, the parts beingotherwise arranged and con structed in detail as hereinafter more particularly explained.
Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of my improved jaws and clevis with attachment, portion of the jaws being broken away and the quadrant placed in position to provide for the adjustment of the clevis in the lower two sets of the outer circle of holes. Fig. 2 is a sectional View showing the quadrant and clevis arranged for adjustment as to the two uppermost holes. Fig. 3 is a view showing the posie tion in which the quadrant may be placed when it is desired not to utilize my adjustends of which and one of the sets of holes,
(1,0, in the jaws, A, and the quadrant, E, the pin, D, extends.
the tooth, c, of the clevis, O.
In Fig. 1, the pin, D, extends through the first set of holes, a, a,'fron1 the bottom set. E, is a quadrant, which is provided with a notch, e, which grips the rearward tooth or extension, 0, of the clevis.
F, is a pin which is inserted through one of the upper sets of holes, a, a. The pin D, passes through 'one of the notches, e, of the quadrant, E. It will, therefore, be seen that the clevis, C, will be held perfectly solid with the jaws, A.
In order to adjust the angle of the clevis in relation to the jaws so as to bring it to any desired position in relation to theline of draft it will be seen that the pin, F, may be drawn and the clevis swung, so as to bring the Cosired notch, e, in the quadrant, E, opposite to one of the sets of holes, a, a, through which the pin, F, may be inserted so as to'hold the clevis, O, rigid with the jaws.
Not only may the clevis be adjusted in relation to the lower sets of holes, a, a, but by reversing the quadrant and pivoting it and the clevis 0n the pin, D, in one of the two upper sets of holes as indicated in Fig. 2, such clevis may beadjusted in reference to the two upper sets of holes'a, a.
By such construction and arrangement of my quadrant in relation to the clevis as hereinbefore described it will be seen that the angle at which the clevis, O, is placed in each set of holes may be varied as to each set so as to alter, the line of draft to the direction de sired.
It will accordingly be understood that by my adjustable rigid clevis arranged as described a great nicety of adjustment is provided so that the depth at which the plow' works may be varied to suit the class of soil in which' it is used.
Whe'nfli'it is desired to use my clevis as a loose or swing clevis the quadrant may be placed in such a position as indicated'in Fig. 3,-or one of the notches, 6, may be placed over The clevis now being pivoted on the pin, D, as indicated in Fig. 3, such clevis will be permitted a perfect freedom of movement no matter whether in one of the front set of holes, a, a, or one of the rear sets of holes, a, a, in the jaws, A, and the quadrant, E, will not interfere with such too freedom of movement. The pin, F, may also be inserted in one of the upper sets of holes as indicated in this figure, so that all the parts will be together and not be liable to be lost and yet will be ready at any time for the changing of the loose into the stiff clevis as hereinbefore described.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In combination, the clevis jaws provided with a series of adjusting holes, the pin, the clevis pivoted on said pin and an adjusting device for said clevis pivoted on said pin and engaging said clevis, and the locking means therefor substantially as described.
2. In combination, the clevis jaws provided with a plurality of holes, the pin extending across between said jaws and each end tilting one of said holes and the clevis and quadrant pivoted on said pin substantially as described.
3. The combination with the clevis jaws of the clevis and quadrant pivotally supported thereby said quadrantbeing adapted to be rotated substantially as described.
4. The combination with the clevis jaws porvided with adjusting holes of the pin supported in said holes, the clevis pivoted on said
