WINDOW- BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters I' atent No. 540,775, dated June 11, 1895 Application filed February 9, 1895 Serial No. 537.814. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD S. BAILEY, a
citizen of'the United States, residing at West Potsdam, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Window-Bracket, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in brackets, scaffolds, or platforms, which are adapted to be applied readily to, and quickly and easily removed from, window casings, and, when not in use, to be folded in a compact form, for storage or shipment.
The object of my invention is to make a window bracket which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, easy to manipulate, capable of being easily and quickly placed'in position, and removed therefrom, and one, which has such an arrangement of parts, that it may be folded into compact shape, for the purpose of transportation, or storage.
It consists of certain details of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter specified and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved bracket or platform detached, showing the position the different parts occupy when in use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing how it is applied to a window-casing, the latter being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device as it appears when folded for shipment or storage.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
A, A, represent two retaining bars, 'or supporting arms, provided at their inner ends with hooks or shoes A, adapted to engage the inner flange of a window casing. These arms A, extend outwardly, from the window casing, in an, approximately, horizontal plane, and, are provided, near their outer ends, and for a considerable distance, inwardly, therefrom, with a series of perforations a, a, for the reception of a horizontal tie-rod B. l
O, 0, represent two parallel braces or supporting bars, which receive the tie bolt B, and thus have a pivotal connection with the horizontal arms A. The braces O, bear at their lower ends against the wall of the house or building, at a point beneath the window cas- '.-;ing,-and have, pivoted to them, at this point, two-parallel, supporting braces D, D, which extend, upwardly, upon the outside of, and beyond the upper face of, the horizontal arms A, where they receive a cross tie rod D, adapted to bear upon the platform timbers, or horizontal arms A, thus firmly bracing the partstogether. The outer bracesO, Q'extend for a considerable distance, upwardly, above the platform frame bars A, and are provided with cross, connecting slats or bars 0, c, to form a back,' or' safety guard, for thepurpose of preventing the person, standing on the platform, from falling therefrom.
E, E, represent side wings 'or flaps, hinged to the upright extensions of the braces C, C, or to the cross slat-s thereof, in the manner shown.
F represents a platform of wood, or other suitable material, hinged upon the rear, cross, tie-rod B, and supported by, and resting upon, the horizontal platform frame bars A, A. The lower ends of the braces C, O, are connected by a cross, tie rod G. p
The tie rod B, the rod G, and, also, the rod D, are of about equal length, and are provided, both inside and outside of the bars, or arms, through which they pass, with securing nuts, whereby the bars and braces, connected by such tie-rods, may be spread, or contracted, for increasing, or diminishing, the width of the bracket. 7
By means of the series of perforations a, a, in the horizontal, retaining arms A, A, the outer braces O, and the safety guard, or back, secured to the upward extensions thereof, may be adjusted, inwardly, toward the window casing, by shifting the tie-rodB, thus providing for the attachment of the device to window casings of varying thickness. The hinged connection between, and at the lower ends of, the braces O, and D, is preferably formed in a manner similar to a rule joint. In other words, the brace O, for example, is provided with a'bifurcated end, or with parallel jaws, or ears, and the brace D, with a tongue, lying within and between said jaws, the two being united bya common pivot, which, in this case, is the tie-rod G.
Various changes in the form, proportion,
and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. In a window bracket or platform, the horizontal retaining bars A formed with hooks on their inner ends, an adjustable back or safety guard hinged to the outer ends thereof and provided with downwardly and inwardly projecting extensions or inclined braces formed integrally with said back, upright braces D hinged to the lower extremities of said inclined extensions or braces and having their upper ends in engagement with the horizontal retaining bars, for the purpose and substantially as specified.
2. In a window bracket or platform, the horizontal retaining bars A provided at their outer ends with a series of horizontally aligned perforations a, an adjustable safety guard or back hinged thereto and provided with inwardly and downwardly projecting extensions or inclined braces formed integrally with said back, the removable tie-rod or bolt 13 connecting said parts and rendering the safety guard or back adjustable lengthwise of the horizontal retaining bars for adapting the device to window sills of different thicknesses, and the upright braces pivoted to the lower ends of said inclined braces or extensions and connected at their upper ends by a cross tierod D, located above and resting upon the upper faces of said retaining bars, all arranged substantially as described.
3. In a window bracket or platform, the horizontal retaining bars A the adjustable back or safety guard hinged to the outer ends there of and provided with the downwardly and inwardly projecting extensions or inclined braces, and the upright braces pivotallyconnected to the lower ends of said extensions or inclined braces and engaged at their upper ends with the horizontal retaining bars, in combination with a pair of side wings or flaps pivotally connected with said back at either side by means of hinges located in advance of the rear edges of said wings or flaps, whereby the rear edges of the wings or flaps are adapted to form stops forlimiting the lateral movements thereof, substantially as shown and described.
