IMPROVEMENT IN PAINTERS SCAFFOLDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,095. dated March 21, 1876; application filed February 5, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HOEHN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Painters Scaffold, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved painters scaffold. Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical transverse sections on line 00, Fig. 1, showing braces, iespectively, in position for use, and as folded for transportation; and Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the scaffold, with folded brace-rods.

My invention relates to an improved painters platform or scaflold of strong and durable construction, on which any number of persons may be supported, and which may be carried from place to place and mounted without injury to the stiffening brace-rods.
The invention consists of a platform or scaffold, with longitudinal brace-rods that are applied by tightening screws to supporting end clips, and to laterally-braced arms or stays, which are hinged to the platform to fold with the rods to the under side of the samel In the drawing, A represents a scafl'old or platform of the customary size or construction, as used for painting the outer walls of buildings, &c. The platform A is stiffened by supporting brace-rods B of considerable strength, that extend longitudinally at the under side of the platform, being connected by screw-nuts a to strong socket-clips 1), near the ends of the platform, and to the lower ends of pendent arms or stays (l at the center of the same. The stays O are hinged to socketlugs d of strong clips or bands (1, that are securely bolted, riveted, or otherwise attached to the beams of the platform. The stays C are locked in vertical position by a lateral brace-rod e that is set by its bent ends into staples e of the stays, so as to hold securely the stays and stiffening brace-rods in position for supporting the platform.
k When the scaffold is to be carried to another place of use the lateral brace is detached, and the longitudinal braces are, with the stays, folded to the under side of the platform, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the conical socket-holes of the end clips b admitting the ready turning of the rods therein. The folding up of the bracerods to the scaffold has the advantage that the bending and injuring of the rods by the rough handling, to which they are exposed during transportation, are avoided, and thereby the scaffold kept in reliable working order. The stays and bracerods are held in folded position by the lateral brace-rod, which may be applied again to suitable sockets or staples of the arms 5 but any other retention device may be used.
The scaffold is made stronger and more durable by the stiffening brace-rods, admitting a number of workmen to stand thereon without bending or breaking. The folding up of the stiffening-rods, after use, brings the scaffold into smaller space, allows the ready handling of the same, and its quick change to a strongly and substantially supported scaffold, by carrying the stays and rods into vertical position and locking them by the lateral bracepiece.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and deside to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A painters platform or scaffold stiffened by longitudinal bottom brace-rods, applied to hinged central arms or stays and end sockets in such a manner that they may be folded up to the under side of the scaffold, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the hinged center arms or stays with a lateral detachable bracerod secured to staples of the same to retain rigid position of arms and brace-rods, substantially as described.
