- A. B. HOLMES.
I WATER ESCAPE AND VENTILATOR. v No. 540,738. r Patented-June 11, 1895.
THIN/GA! f FLUQR annul- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW B. HOLMES, OF SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
WATER-ESCAPE AND VENTILATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,738, dated June 11, 1895.
I Application filed November 5, 1894. Serial No. 627,993. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, ANDREW B. HOLMES, a citizen of the United-States, residing at the city of Scranton, county of Lackawanna, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Water-Escape and Ventilator for the conducting of water from the interior of buildings in cases of fire or other flooding, and have invented the same with a protecting cage or shield on the interior openin g and an automatic lid, trap, or slide on the exterior opening; and I declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others. to use the same.
Heretofore experience has shown thatin the cases of fire in buildings, seventy-five (75) per cent. of the loss occurs from damage caused by Water which is poured into the building to extinguish the fire.
The object of my invention is to conduct the water which is poured into the building for the purpose of extinguishing the fire, or flooding from any cause, out of the building from the same floor on which it is thrown or flooded, and also to ventilate the building by means of a pipe, tube or conduit passing from the interior to the exterior of the building, and: marked (a) in Figures 1 and 2 on the drawings hereto attached; and forthe purpose of protecting the opening of the tube or con duit and preventing the obstructing of the same on the interior of the building I have invented a protecting cage or shield marked (B) von Figs. 1 and 2 of drawings hereto attached, so that the tube, pipe or conduit (a) should be ready for use at alltimes and in all emergencies, and for the purpose of automatically permitting the water to escape from the tube or conduit (a), or to prevent a draft or current of air from entering the building from the exterior, except when required, I have invented an automatic trap, door or lid marked (0) in Figs. 1 and 2"of the drawings hereto attached.
The entire device, including the tube or conduit, cage or shield, on the interior of the building, and the trap, door or lid on the exterior is fully illustrated in the plan view of the drawings marked Fig. 1, and also in the vertical section of the drawings marked Fig. 2, which is hereto attached.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The device for conducting water from the interior of buildings, and for ventilating thesame, consisting of a pipe or boxing a, extending from the surface of the floor of the building through the wall thereof, and pro vided with a heading or shield B, and outside self closing valve 0, substantially as and for the purpose described.
ANDREW B. HOLMES.
