Description

I. E. STUMP. ROTATING FAN.
(No Model.)
No. 540,520. Patehted June 4, 1895.
V INvENwv. flu. 8
1/4 Bide UNITED STATES PATENT 'OFFICE,
IRA E: STUMP, OF CANTON, OHIO. l
ROTATING FAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 540,520, dated June 4, 1895. Application filed January 31, 1895; Serial No. 536,801. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, IRA E. STUMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotating Fans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure l is a side elevation showing a part of the fan-blade broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the handle, showing the fan-stem properly located, also showing the location of the reciprocating bars. Fig. 3 is a view showing a portion of the handle and illustrating the position of the reciprocating bars and the spring. Fig. 4 is a view showing the top or upper end of the handle.
The present invention has relation to rotating fans, and it consists in the difierent parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawwas.
In the accompanying drawings,'A represents the handle which, is substantially of the form shown, and as shown it is provided with a central opening or bore a, which receives the bottom or lower portion of the fan stem 4 B, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 2.
The fan stem B extends upward a sufficient distance to properly attach the fan blade 0,
which fan blade may be of any desired styleor kind, inasmuch as the blade within itself forms no particular part of the present invention, except a fan blade of some kind must necessarily be used.
The fan stem B is provided with a kerf b, which kerf is for the purpose of receiving the fan blade, said kerf being extended a short distance below the bottom of the fan blade for the purpose hereinafter described.
The top or upper end of the handle A, is provided with the notches or recesses c, which notches or recesses are formed parallel to each other, and are for the purpose of forming guides for the reciprocating bars d. For the purpose of holding the reciprocating bars at in proper position, the ferrule D is provided, which ferrule also serves for the purpose of protecting the handle A.
To one end of the reciprocating bars d, are located the right angled portion 6, and the downward extended arm f, said parts being located substantially as illustrated in the drawings. The opposite ends of the reciprocating bars d, are provided with the arm g, and the push plate or button 71, said parts being located and arranged substantially as shown, and are preferably formed integral with the bars 01.
The cord E is attached to the right angled portion '6 and the'arm g, by means of suitable tangs is, said cord being wrapped the desired number of times around the tangs, and the cord tightly drawn under the tangs after which the tangs may be bent to securely clamp the ends of the cord.
The cord E is wrapped a desired number of times around the fan stem, and for the pur pose of insuring the rotation of the fan stem and its blade the cord E is passed through the kerf b, after which the cord is wrapped around the fan stem. It will be understood that the cord E should be wrapped the desired number of times around the fan stem before the ends of the cords are attached.
The elastic band F is located substantially as shown in the drawings, and as shown one end'of said band is placed upon the handle A, and the other end placed over the armf.
In use force is brought upon the push plate, thereby moving the bars d, at which time the elastic band F is extended, and when the pressure is removed from the push plate or button, the elasticity of the band F, will automatically bring the bars 61 to their normal position. It will be understood that the reciprocating bars 61 are to be operated by the thumb, placing the thumb upon the plate or buttons h.
For the purpose of holding the cord upon the right angled'portion e, and the arm g, said parts are provided with the shaped notches k.
In the drawings I have illustrated the reciprocating bars (1 together with their different parts as formed from a sheet of metal, but it will be understoodthat the same object can be accomplished by the use of wire bent to conform, substantially with the form shown, and the same object accomplished.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is w 1. The combination of the handle A, provided with the bore a, the fan stem B,having attached thereto a fan blade, the reciprocating bars d, having attached thereto, the right angled portion e, the arm g,and the push button or plate, the cord E wrapped around the fan stem, and the elastic band, F, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the handle A, provided with notches or recesses, the parallel reciprocating bars (1, the right angled portion e, the arm g, the tangs 70, formed upon the arm g, and the right angled portion e, the cord E and a rotating fan stem, and the elastic band F. substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
IRA E. STUMP. Witnesses:
F. W. BOND, E. A. 0. SMITH.
