SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 5&0/118, dated June 4, 1895.

Be it known that I, REUBEN J. BOLT, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to produce a combination lock which is simple and economicalin construction, efficient in operation, not liable to get outof repair and capable of a very large number of combinations, such lock being adapted by reason of its simplicity and cheapness to be applied to many purposes for which combination locks are not ordinarily adapted, such as boxes, chests, trunks, drawers and other articles of furniture, as well as safes and Similar receptacles.
The nature of the invention is fully described below, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which 7 Figure 1 is an elevation with the cover, swung up into a horizontal position, so as to show an edge only, the device being locked. Fig. 2 is an elevation with the front plate removed, the lock being in the same position as indicated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 2 with the mechanism in the position assumed when the first step in unlocking has been taken-that is to say, when the lock is partially unlocked. Fig. t is a similar view showing the lock fully unlocked.- Fig.'5 is a cross-section taken on line 00, Fig. 1. Fig.4) is a section taken on line 1 Fig. 2.

A represents a portion of the upright front wall of a trunk, chest or similar receptacle. A is the lid or top thereof provided with the ordinary locking loop or tongue a for engagement with the lock.
The case which contains the lock consists of the rear wall B, end walls B, upper and lower walls B and front wall 19. This front wall has built upon it the narrow walls or plates 0 (Figs. 1 and '5) which constitute threesides of a rectangle, and from the upper or horizontal one of which is hinged the lid or swinging cover 0 which, when in its normal position-that is to say, that indicated in Fig. 5.-acts as a protection to the means of screws 0, or in any suitable manner, and the .front wall 19 thereof is provided with a dial b which surrounds a central hole, and a slot 6 the objects of which are below described.
D is a horizontal shaft having its bearings in the plates or walls B b. This shaft D (see Fig. 6) has rigidly secured to or integral with ita disk E provided with a radial notch E extending inward from its periphery. Above this disk E is a disk F provided witha radial or peripheral notch F, such disk being integral with a sleevef which is loose upon said shaft D. This shaft extends through the perforation in the plate or wall b which is in the center of the dial 1); and rigidly secured to the sleeve f and the shaft D, outside the plate I), are the pointersS and S respectively, held in position by a suitable'nut d.
H is a disk provided with a peripheral, radial notch H and fast upon or integral with the shaft H having its bearings in the rear and front plates B b. This shaft extends up through a suitable opening in the plate or wall 19, and is squared to receive the pointer S on the outside of the plate I).
-h is a horizontal post or pin supported by the plates B b. Pi voted upon this pin is the curved lever K of substantially the shape shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4c. The head of this lever is provided with a hook K for engagement with the tongue at. The tail of the lever is curved as shown at K" and is connected by a spring Z with the case. Extending from this lever are projections or branches I, J and J; and extending from the branches J and J respectively are. the blades 1 and 2, while a blade 3 extends from the tail of the lever. The blade 1 is of suitable shape and set at a suitable angle to enter the notch H, while the blades 2 and 3 are set at suitable angles to enter the notches F and E.
Pivotally applied to the pin 72. by means of a Suitable hub L, is an arm L whose outer end broadens into a plate L provided with a slot m, and formed into 'a projection or pusher n. The swing of this arm and plate is accomplished by the shaft H which extends lock. The case is secured to the wall A bythrough the slot m, and the pushern is formed to engage or abut against the end of the branch or projection I. A handle P extends up from the plate L" through the slot 1)". A suitable washer h surrounds the pin it between the hub L and the plate b.
Vhen the device is locked, the parts are in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, that is to say, the hook K is in engagement with the tongue a, the projection I rests upon the end of the pusher n, the blade 1 lies in the notch H in the periphery of the disk H, and the blade 3 lies in the two coinciding notches E F in the disks E F, such position being produced and maintained by the power of the spring Z. The eitect on the handles P is to push it down to its lowest point in the slot 1), such effect being produced by the pressure of the portion I upon the pushers '21.
To unlock the lock, push the knob or handleP up in the slot 1), thus causing the pusher n to swing the lever K into the position indicated in Fig. 3, withdrawing the blade 3 from the notches E F. The device being now in the position indicated in Fig. 3, the disks E F are free to be rotated by the pointers S S until the suitable combination on the dial is reached to bring the two notches E F into coincidence in the position indicated in Fig. 4. Another push upward is then given to the knob I, the eifect of which is to swing the catch K entirely out of engagement with the tongue or, and push the blade 2 into the coinciding notches E F, as shown in Fig. 4. In order that the lock may remain in this unlocked position, the upward pressure upon the knob E is continued while a movement in either direction is given to the pointer S. This rotates the disk H (which was freed by the last backward movement of the lever K withdrawing the blade 1 from the notch H) so that upon releasing the knob, the blade 1 will bear against the periphery of the disk H and hold the lever K in the position indicated in Fig. 4, leaving the arm L, plate L and knob P free to drop by gravity into the position indicated in said figure.
To look the device again, turn the pointer S sutiiciently to allow the blade 1 to drop into the notch H. This causes the blade 2 to be withdrawn from its position indicated in Fig. 4 in the notches E F, while the blade 3 is forced by the spring Z against the peripheries of the disks E F. By moving the pointers S S, the disks E F are rotated according to the combination until the notches E F come into coincidence with the blade 3, when such blade instantly drops into the position indicated in Fig. 1, and the lock is securely fastened until the double pointers S S are operated by a person knowing the combination, all as above described.
It will readily be perceived that the combinations possible to the disks and pointers are exceedingly numerous.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In acombination lock, the rotatable disks E F provided with peripheral notches E F and supported within the case, pointers S S actuating said disks, the lever K pivotally secured within the case and of substantially the shape shown, that is to say with one end formed into the hook K and the other end K curved so as to bend back and upward toward the said disks, the blade 2 extending from the main portion of the lever toward the disks, the blade 3 extending from the end of said portion 1 of the lever toward the disks, said blades being adapted to enter the said notches, the arm L pivoted within the case and provided with the pusher n and a knob or handle extending outside the case, and a spring holding normally one of the blades in the notches and the lever against the pusher, substantially as set forth.
2. In acombination lock,therotatablc disks E F provided with peripheral notches E F and supported within the case, the rotatable disk H provided with the peripheral notch 11 and supported within the case, the lever K provided on one side with the blade 1 adapted to enter the notch 11 and on the other side and end with the blades 2 and 3 adapted a1- ternately to enter the notches E F, suitable pointers adapted to actuate said disks, the arm L plate L and pusher n pivotally secured within the case and adapted to engage the said lever and be operated by a suitable knob or handle, and the spring l connecting the lever and the case, substantially as described.
3. The herein described improved combination lock, comprising the case furnished with a suitable dial, the shaft D supported therein, notched disk E rigid thereon, notched disk F rigid on a sleeve on said shaft, pointers S S actuating said disk, notched disk H mounted on the shaft 1-1, pointer 8" adapted to actuate said disk, lever K pivotally secured within the case between the disks E F and the disk H, said lever being provided with the blades 1, 2, 3 and the extension I, stringing arm L provided with the slotted plate L and pusher n and adapted to be operated by a handle from the outside, and spring Zconneeting said lever with the case, substantially as set forth.
