SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,225, dated June 4, 1895..

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARY BATES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dress Covers and Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an extra skirt or cover fastened about the waist or at some point on the outside of the skirt and having a lower portion which folds upward inwardly inclosing the bottoms of all the skirts and havin g suitable openings and attachments for fastoning about the legs at some point near the knee, thus inclosing, entirely covering and supporting the dress and other skirts. In the drawings, Figure 1 is a detail elevation of my invention, showing the garment as it appears when not in use; and Fig. 2 is a similar elevation, showing the same when in use and upon the person of the wearer.

A represeuts an outer skirt of waterproof or other suitable material provided with a band or other suitable attachment for fastening at the waist. At or near the bottom of this skirt at the line a a is attached permanently or otherwise a facing B which may be turned upward inwardly after the garment is put on and is intended to inclose the lower part of and partly support the skirts. At the bottom of the facing are attached leg pieces 0 c, which are each open along the line 0 d, thus leaving a single opening from the outside of one leggin to the outside of the other, whereby the protector may be put on over the head, and yet can be turned up and fastened about the legs near the knee, by a band or other suitable adjustment.

The operation of my invention is as follows: The garment being open continuously across the bottom may be put on over the head. After being adjusted at the waist the facing B is turned upward inwardly around the lower edge of the skirts and the leg pieces are then fastened about the legs near the knee. It will be seen that the lower part of the skirts will thus be entirely inclosed and covered and if too long may be partly raised and supported so that in inclement weather no water or dirt of any kind can reach them.

essarily entirely confined to a garment in the form of a skirt but that it may cover the entire figure as an outer garment or ulster.

By providing the tapering facing B, the size of the leggins may be considerably reduced, and thus there is less material required and less weight to carry, especially when the protector becomes soaked with water, as such articles always do when in use, they being only worn in wet weather. Besides this, such tapering facing helps to form a kind of bottom to the pocket formed between the leggins and the body.

I am aware that it is not new to provide dress protectors with parts that turn upward inwardly, and that such have been made with separate leggins as shown in the United States Patent No. 369,535, and with straps to hold the turned-up portion in place, as in the United States Patent No. 275,014. I am also aware that coats and shirts have been made in which the tails are provided with fastenings to allow of their being buttoned around the legs, as shown in the Patents Nos. 267,120

and 419,812, and therefore make no claim to anything shown in any of these patents, as I regard my improvement as essentially different from all of them; for while my protector is adapted to be put on over the head, it also forms a closed pocket to contain the skirts it is worn to protect, and a means of protecting the upper part of the logs from cold and splashing.

What I claim as my invention, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a dress protector, the skirt A, the tapering facing B, and the tapering leggins 0 adapted to be worn inverted and having their larger ends connected to the inner edge of the facing B, their smaller ends adapted to fasten near the knees to protect the upper parts of the legs from cold and splashing, and provided with a single opening extending from the outer side of one leggin to the outer side of the other when unfastened, all substantially as described and shown and for the purpose specified.
