SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,181, dated May 28, 1895.

Application filed April 21, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALEXIS O. MCDONALD, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Granite, inthe county of Granite and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain improvements in umbrellas, and it has for its object, principally, to shorten up the umbrella when folded for greater convenience in carrying it when not in use as such, and it consists of the novel combination and arrangement of the parts all substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed and specifically pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure'l is a skeleton view of the umbrella-i. a, the frame without its covershown partly open. Fig. 2 is a similar view of said parts, shown closed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged broken detail view thereof, showing more fully the principal feature of my invention. Fig. 4: is a slightlyenlarged detailed sectional view showing a rib and slide each broken away; and Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are additional detail views of a rib, a slide broken away, and the removable tip with top runner and adjacent portion of stick or handle, respectively.

In the embodiment of my invention, I employ a handle or stick A of the usual construction, except it is made in sections screwed together, to provide for taking apart and shortening up the same to accommodate it to the shortened-up cover and frame more fully described farther on.

If desired one or more of the sections'of the stick may be removed to accommodate it to the shortened form of the frame and cover. The tip e of the umbrella stick or handle is also screwed thereto and consequently can be removed, to still furthershorten up the same if so desired, for greater convenience in carrying the umbrella.
