POT FOR MANUFACTURING TIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,165, dated May 28, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS WILLIAM I-IUZZEY and EDWIN RICHARD J ONES, citizens of the United States, residing at 'Blairsville,
in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pots for Manufacturing Tin; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itpertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to an improved melting pot for use in the manufacture of tin plates, and it consists in the'peculiar form and contour of the said pot, together with the partition wall for separating the same into two compartments, the one for the grease and the other for the molten tin, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawing, the figure is a central sectional elevation of our improved tin-melting and grease pot, which is constructed and arranged in accordance with our invention.
To put our invention into practice we construct from cast metal a melting pot consist- 0 ing of the tin compartment 1 having an outlet'or drain orifice 12, and the rear wall 3 extended upward a short distance, and then sloping backward to form the inclined por tion 4. Integral with this melting pot 1 is a 3 5 grease pot 2 which is elevated above the said melting pot, and is also provided with an outlet pipe 12 and sloping rear wall which meets or joins the inclined base 4c of the melting portion of the pot. Formed integral with the top of the melting pot l is a downwardly extending partition wall 6 which is adapted to extend a short distance into the molten tin contained in the pot 1 and form a dividing wall between the tin in the oneside of the pot, 5 and the grease in the other. This pot is fitted with rolls 7 and guides 8,9 in a manner and for a purpose Well known in the art. This pot constructed as described is arranged over two furnaces 13, 14, the one, 13, for melting the tin in the pet I, and the other 14 for melting the grease in the compartment 2, and the construction and arrangement 'of' the said furnaces may be of any desired form or style.
In operation, the molten tin in the compartment 1 is kept at or about the level indicated by the dotted line 10, and the grease in the compartment 2 on the level of the broken line 11. The sheets to be coated are passed through the guides 8, 9, thereby immersing the same in the molten tin, and passed upward through the grease and rolls 7.
It will be noticed that by means of the peculiar construction of this melting pot, but a very small portion of the grease contained in the compartment 2 is in contact with the molten tin, thereby saving vast quantities of the said grease from evaporating, and by using a furnace for the tin and another for the grease the heat may be so proportionedas to keep the two articles at the proper temperature.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat- The herein described pot for tinning, consisting of the two compartments or chambers, one having its rear wall extended upward a short distance and sloped rearward and the other chamber having also a sloping rear Wall meeting the corresponding wall of the aforesaid chamber or compartment, and having the forward portion of its bottom arranged on a level with the top edge of the aforesaid chamber or compartment and a pendent wall arranged at the inner edge of said forward bottom portion, and depending in the aforesaid chamber or compartment to a point in proximity with the sloping wall thereof providing a passage thereat, substantially as set forth.
