SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,309, dated May 14, 1895. Application filed March 2, I895. Serial No. 540,358. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that Lflnnav MARTIN SEY- BOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ann Arbor, in the countyof Washtenaw and State of Michigan,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oaponizers; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable ot hers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in spaying or caponizing fowls, by removing the testicles from the male and the ovaries from the female bird.
The object of the invention is to provide an instrument of the above character by means of which the parts to be removed can be readily grasped and detached from the tissues.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a caponizing instrument constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail showing a modification of structure wherein the male cup is integral with the tube.
To enable others to make and use my invention I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings,
in which- The reference numeral 1, designates a small tube provided at its outer end with a short extension or rod 2, having at its extremity an oblong concavo-convex cup 3, at a right angle to the long axis of the tube. This cup, which for the purpose of illustration, I term the female cup, has its under side tilted or inclined at an angle, as shown, and its edge is ground or beveled atan angle of forty-five degrees, or

The distal end of the plunger is provided with a head 10, and the coiled spring 5, which encircles the plunger bears against a collar 12, thereon, soas to retract the plunger after it has been actuated to bring the cups together.
Secured to the inner end of the rod or bar 2, on the upper side thereof, is one end of a fiat spring 13, the free end of which terminates just in rear of the cup 3. The object of this spring is to cause the beveled cutting edge of the cup 9, to be forced toward the cutting edge of the cup 3, so that a clean cut will be made when said cup 9, is forced into cup 3.
The operation is as follows: The parts to be removed having been exposed, the instru- 'ment is then inserted and said parts engaged between the male and female cups. The plu nger is now actuated by pressing upon its head with the thumb, causing the cups to be forced together, the cutting edges thereof, severing or detaching the parts from the tissues. The
instrument is then withdrawn carrying with it the parts detached. The plunger is now released when the cups will be returned to normal position by means of the coiled spring when the parts detached from the fowl can be removed from the cups.
' It will be noted that the spring 13, not only serves to press the cup 9, against the cup 3, but also serves as a guide for the former whereby it will be properly guided in its movement toward cup 3.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim is- 1. A caponizing instrument comprising the tube having an extension at one end provlded with a conc'avo-convex cup havlng a cutting edge, and a spring actuated plunger having a concavo-convex cup formed with a cutting edge, adapted to engage with 'the'cup at the end of the extension, substantially as described.
2. A caponizing instrument comprising the tube having an extension at one end and provided with a concavo-convex cup formed with a cutting edge, the spring having one end secured to the inner end of said extension and a spring actuated plunger having a concavo-convexoup formed .with a cuttingedge,
adapted to engage with the cup at the end of said extension, substantially as described.
3. In a caponizing instrument, the combination with the tube having an extension at one end provided with a concave-convex cup, with a cutting edge, and a sleeve at the opposite end having finger loops and a screw cap, and the coiled spring located in said sleeve, of the plunger having a cup at one end working on said extension and the collar on said [O plunger against which said spring abuts, substantially as described.
