UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FIDELIO FINKE, WILLIAM MATTHEISS, AND HARRY FABY, OF BALTIMORE,
" MARYLAND.
AUTOMATIC FAN FOR ROCKING-CHAIRS, CRADLES, &;O.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,047, dated May 14,1895. Application filetl September 7; 1894- Serial No. 5 22 393. (No model.)
To all ugjwm it may concern:
Be it known that we, FIDELIO FINKE, WIL- LIAM MATTHEISS, and HARRY FABY, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have.
culiar construction of the fan attachmentswhereby the motion of the chair or cradle'is transmitted to the fan, as will hereinafter In the further description of the said inventionwhich follows, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which-+ Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rockingchair provided with a fan in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side view,
-on an enlarged scale, of the fan and its attachments. Fig. 3 is a front View of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings, A represents a rocking chair of any desired pattern and construction. The sides, or side frames of the back of the chair, are provided with two extensions, 1) of any suitable design. These extensions will be varied to suit chairs 'of different patterns, and their shape is of little importance. In the present case they are provided with lugs c which are bored to receive rods d, which pass loosely through them and are secured atany height by means of thumb screws 6. The extensions b and the rod d form extensible standards for the fan mechanism hereinaftervdescribed. At their upper ends the bars d have sleeves f which hold sliding bars B with eyes 9 at their ends. These bars B are adjustable in position and when set are fastened by thumb screws h.
C is a spindle adapted to move loosely in the eyes g. At the middle of the spindle O and itsadjustment to any desired angle of inclination. One end of thespindle O is turned down to form an arm which has a counter balancing weight G which serves to hold the said arm in a normally vertical position.
The fan when applied and arranged as described, needs no devices to operate it, as it vibrates 'as the chair is rocked.
We claim as our inven'tion 1. In combination with a rocking chair or cradle, a loosely hung spindle carrying a fan which is adjustable in angle of inclination, an arm on the said spindle having a weight which normally retains the said arm in a vertical position without reference to the position of the chair, substantially as specified.
2. In combination with a rocking chair or cradle, a pair of standards having sleeves at their upper ends, bars held adj ustably in the sleeves, having eyes at their forward ends, a spindle loosely supported in the said eyes, having an arm-carrying a counterbalancing weight, and a clamp adjustably attached to thesaid spindle, adapted for attachment to a fan, substantially as specified. 3. In combination with a rocking chair or cradle, a pair of extensible standards having sleeves at their upper ends, bars situated in
